DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 2 (Mammalian Hormones) The demonstration of immunoreactive proopiomelanocortin [66796-54-1] peptides b-endorphin (b-E) [60617-12-1], b-lipotropin (b-LPH) [37377-93-8], a-MSH [37213-49-3], and ACTH [9002-60-2] in the human placenta or in tissue cultures of placental origin suggested that opioid peptide hormones or their precursors are synthesized in the placenta. Sections of the placenta were incubated with antisera against b-E, b-LPH, a-MSH, ACTH, BAM-12 P, BAM-22 P, heptapeptide, a-neoendorphin, and dynorphin 1-17 using immunoperoxidase to test this hypothesis. The placenta and the pituitary of perfusion-fixed rats were used for controls. Neg. immunohistochem. 66796-54-1 and 60617-12-1 are just another two chemicals used in this study. findings in the human as well as rat placenta do not support the view that b-E, b-LPH, a-MSH, and ACTH are synthesized in the syncytiotrophoblast of this organ. The site of origin of propiomelanocortin peptides which are present in the maternal and the fetal plasma most likely is the maternal and fetal pituitary. .

Both ACTH and cortisol increased the succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity in a suspension of gill cells from presmolts, but not in a homogenate of gill tissue. Neither hormone increased the size or abundance of gill Cl- cells. ACTH caused fin darkening, but neither ACTH nor cortisol induced body silvering. .
