DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 16 (Fermentation and Bioindustrial Chemistry) Viable Kluyveromyces fragi yeasts cells were successfully entrapped in polyacrylamide [9003-05-8] and k-carrageenan [11114-20-8] gel beads. Small amts. of precultured yeast cells were mixed with specific concns. of gel solns. and gel beads of uniform size were manufd. by a gelation process. For both batch and continuous fermn. systems, the cells grew well in the gel. In batch fermn. trials, there was no significant shift in the pH profile for either the polyacrylamide or the k-carrageenan immobilized cell systems. Continuous fermns. were carried out in a column with an initial packed gel height of 13 cm but with different diln. rates using 10% lactose solns. reconstituted from sweet whey powder as the medium. The immobilized growing cell systems exhibited high and stable activity for EtOH [64-17-5] prodn. under steady-state conditions. A max. productivity of 7.8 g/L-h at a diln. rate of 0.800 h-L for polyacrylamide immobilized cell and 13.3 g/L-h at 0.679 h-L for k-carrageenan immobilized cells was obtained. 11114-20-8 and 64-17-5 are just another two chemicals used in this study. Of the 2 methods, the use of k-carrageenan for immobilizing yeasts for EtOH prodn. from whey was better. .
