Long-term effects of calcium carrageenan in rats
Long-term effects of calcium carrageenan in rats. II. Effects on fetal development. Collins, T. F. X.; Black, T. N.; Prew, J. H. (Div. Toxicol., Food Drug Adm., Washington, D. C., USA). Food Cosmet. Toxicol., 15(6), 539-45 (English) 1977. CODEN: FCTXAV. ISSN: 0015-6264. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 17 (Foods) Section cross-reference(s): 4 Long-term multigeneration effects of the dietary intake of calcium carrageenan [9049-05-2] were measured in a 3-generation reprodn. and teratol. study in Osborne-Mendel rats. Dietary levels of 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, or 5.0% were ingested throughout the study. Developmental effects were studied in the F2C and F3C litters. No dose-related effect on maternal wt. gain was obsd. The av. nos. of corpora lutea, implantations, and early or late deaths, and the av. percentage resorptions per litter showed no dose-related differences. No specific external, skeletal, or soft-tissue anomaly could be correlated with dosage.

Dietary levels of 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, or 5.0% were ingested throughout the study. Carrageenan ingestion caused dose-related and significant decreases in the wts. of offspring at weaning, but no effects were detected with respect to fertility, av. litter size, av. no. of liveborn animals, viability, or survival of offspring.
