It is blue-gray powder which is an oxidoreductase that catalyzes the reaction between superoxide anions and hydrogen to yield molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. The enzyme protects the cell against dangerous levels of superoxide.
The following half-reactions are Dismutase, superoxide(SOD)-catalysed dismutation of superoxide:
M(n+1)+-SOD + O2- → Mn+-SOD + O2
Mn+-SOD + O2- + 2H+ → M(n+1)+-SOD + H2O2.
where M = Cu (n=1) ; Mn (n=2) ; Fe (n=2) ; Ni (n=2).
