Streptomyces was agglutinated by addn. of chitosan [9012-76-4] at pH 6. Lactobacillus was also agglutinated with chitosan. Agglutination was followed by acetylation or treatment with anionic high mol. wt. electrolytes. Some high mol. wt. anionic electrolytes that ppt. when mixed with chitosan and improve enzyme retention are polyacrylic acid [9003-01-4] and gum arabic. Drying or freezing the cells also enhanced enzyme retention.
