The activity of thiacetazone, thiambutosine, thiocarlide and sulfamethoxypyridazine against Mycobacterium leprae in mice
The activity of thiacetazone, thiambutosine, thiocarlide and sulfamethoxypyridazine against Mycobacterium leprae in mice. Colston, M. J.; Hilson, G. R. F.; Ellard, G. A.; Gammon, Patricia T.; Rees, R. J. W. (St. George's Hosp. Med. Sch., London, Engl.). Lepr. Rev., 49(2), 101-13 (English) 1978. CODEN: LEREAA. ISSN: 0024-1032. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) The mouse footpad model was used to evaluate the activity of thiambutosine [500-89-0], thiocarlide [910-86-1], thiacetazone [104-06-3] and sulfamethoxypyridazine [80-35-3] against M. leprae. The min. EDs of thiambutosine and thiocarlide were approx. 0.05% and of thiacetazone 0.03%, although different strains of M. leprae displayed varying sensitivity to all 3 drugs. The minimal inhibitory concns. of thiambutosine, thiacetazone, and sulphamethoxypyridazine were about 0.5 mg/mL, 0.2 mg/mL,and 30 mg/mL, resp. The antileprosy activity of thiambutosine, thiocarlide, and thiacetazone was essentially bacteriostatic. The clin. relevance of these findings is discussed.
