Synthetic peptide, produced by solid-phase synthesis, mimiced the biol. effects of crude atrial ext. and purified peptide; its activity was enhanced by slow oxidn., suggesting a disulfide (Cys 4-Cys 20) configuration for the native peptide. If secreted into blood, auriculin A may be a novel peptide hormone of considerable importance to renal and cardiovascular homeostasis.

In addn., auriculin A decreased renin [9015-94-5] secretion and decreased plasma renin and aldosterone [52-39-1] levels. Thus, auriculin A may play a role in the regulation of blood pressure, renal function, and Na and extracellular fluid vol. balances.
