Dietary compds. included phenols, cinnamic acids, coumarins, indoles, and isothiocyanates. Pretreatments were carried out either by administering the compd. by gavage 2 h prior to sacrifice (acute protocol) or by adding the compd. to the diet for 2 wk (chronic protocol). Acute pretreatment with benzyl isothiocyanate [622-78-6], allyl isothiocyanate [57-06-7], phenethyl isothiocyanate [2257-09-2], phenyl isocyanate [103-71-9], and benzylthiocyanate [3012-37-1] but not Na thiocyanate [540-72-7] inhibited formation of a-hydroxylation products of both nitrosamines. When the chronic pretreatment protocol was used, only Ph isothiocyanate and Na thiocyanate inhibited formation of a-hydroxylation products of both nitrosamines. Pretreatments with BHA, p-methoxyphenol, or N-acetylcysteine had little, if any, effect on the a-hydroxylation of N-nitrosopyrrolidine or N'-nitrosonornicotine. Chronic pretreatment with p-hydroxycinnamic acid [7400-08-0], 4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid [1135-24-6], coumarin [91-64-5], umbelliferone [93-35-6], limetin [487-06-9], indole [120-72-9], indole-3-carbinol [700-06-1], indole-3-acetonitrile [771-51-7], and L-tryptophan [73-22-3] induced activity for the a-hydroxylation of N-nitrosopyrrolidine. The results of this study indicate that isocyanates are possible candidates for further study as potential inhibitors of carcinogenesis by N-nitrosopyrrolidine and N'-nitrosonornicotine.

Justicia Exts. lowered locomotor activity in mice but did not affect the hyperactivity induced by 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine [1019-45-0], the primary psychotropic constituent of Virola resin snuff.
