Mass spectral identification of a metabolite of chlorpropham in potatoes
Mass spectral identification of a metabolite of chlorpropham in potatoes. Heikes, David L. (Total Diet Res. Cent., Food Drug Adm., Kansas City, MO 64106, USA). J. Agric. Food Chem., 33(2), 246-9 (English) 1985. CODEN: JAFCAU. ISSN: 0021-8561. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 17 (Food and Feed Chemistry) Residues of chlorpropham (CIPC) [101-21-3], a selective herbicide also used as a sprout suppressant on stored potatoes, were found in table-ready potatoes. A second compd., detected by gas chromatog. was found to be assocd. with many of these residues. This suspected metabolite of CIPC was identified by gas chromatog.-mass spectra comparison to synthesized ref. stds. as isopropyl N-(3-chloro-4-methoxyphenyl)carbamate (I) [94483-57-5]. Home-grown potatoes, previously free of all detectable residues, were found to contain I 21 days after CIPC postharvest application, thus confirming this methoxy deriv. as a formerly unreported metabolite of CIPC. Levels of this metabolite as high as 0.063 ppm (French fries) have been encountered in various table-ready potatoes.
