DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 40 (Dyes, Fluorescent Whitening Agents, and Photosensitizers) Piperidine-catalyzed condensation of benzoxazole-2-carboxaldehyde (I) [62667-25-8] prepd. by SeO2 oxidn. of 2-methylbenzoxazole [95-21-6], with quaternized Me-substituted heterocycles 8-12 h in refluxing EtOH gave 55-70% of the corresponding styrylcyanine dyes. The corresponding dimethine bases were prepd. by similar reaction of I with the nonquaternized heterocycles 14-18 h in refluxing EtOH. Reaction of I ethiodide [62667-26-9] with quaternized and nonquaternized compds. under similar conditions gave the corresponding mono- and diquaternary dyes. .

Assuming C-C and C-H distances obtained from interat. tables, the 2nd moment (S2) was calcd. in the presence of CH3 reorientation and compared with the exptl. There are some commonly used reagents like 95-21-6 in this article. S2 value. The fall of S2 from 6 ± 1 G2 to 0.4 ± 1 G2 at 262-300 K indicates general mol. reorientation. This reorientation is assocd. with an activation energy of 10.0 kJ mol-1. .
