DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 60 (Waste Treatment and Disposal) Section cross-reference(s): 61 Field studies of the application of wastewater treatment sludge to wastewater-irrigated land indicated that, despite the presence of many industrial chem. in the sludge, most of the org. compds. were degraded, with the exception of 2,2'-dichloroazobenzene [7334-33-0], which may have been introduced by past irrigation or may result from microbial transformation of 2-chloroaniline [95-51-2]. Metal build-up in the soil was minimal; Zn concns. increased slightly in the groundwater, but 350% of this could be related to either present or past irrigations. 7334-33-0 is just another one chemical used in this study. Corn grown on the sludge application area was chem. no different from that grown on the background area that was apparently healthier. .

- Smoke generators. IV. The ignition of loose powder mixtures of pyrotechnic white smoke compositions containing hexachloroethane and silumin in sealed tubes. Hartley, F. R.; Murray, S. G.; Williams, M. R. (Dep. Chem. Metall., R. Milit. Coll. Sci., Shrivenham SN6 8LA, UK). Propellants, Explos., Pyrotech., 9(3), 108-14 (English) 1984. CODEN: PEPYD5. ISSN: 0721-3115. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 50 (Propellants and Explosives) A small sealed tube was used to study the reaction between hexachloroethane [67-72-1] and silumin, which is important in certain types of smoke generating pyrotechnics. Std. amts. were heated at 483 K in a 12-cm3 tube. Products identified were AlCl3 and tetrachloroethylene [127-18-4]. The effects of added oxides were noted. ZnO, MgO, and CuO inhibited the reaction. Fe2O3 accelerated the reaction, and SnO, ZrO2, and TiO2 had little effect. Other substances found to inhibit the reaction were NH4Cl, water, and o-chloroaniline [95-51-2]. Pentachloroethane [76-01-7] was a product when water was present; this indicated the formation of pentachloroethyl radicals.
