Total particulate matter was collected on cigaret filter tips and Cambridge filter pads. Phenolic compds. were extd. with a 1N NaOH soln. Five different brands of filter-tipped cigarets from the French market were analyzed. Their phenol [108-95-2], guaiacol [90-05-1], 3-methylphenol [108-39-4], 4-methylphenol [106-44-5], 2-methylphenol [95-48-7], and 3,4-dimethylphenol [95-65-8] levels were detd. in comparison with an internal std., o-chlorophenol. With the same method, the phenolic retention efficiency of different cigaret filter tips was compared.

PhOH dominated in the piglet house and 2,6-dimethylphenol in the henhouse. The odor intensity in the finishing pig house, where phenols amt. to 275 mg/g dust, was distinctly higher than the piglet house with phenols 111 mg/g. The possible effects of dustborne PhOH and skatole on the animals, esp. respiratory effects, are discussed.
