- Photoinitiated cationic polymerization of tetrahydrofuran. Poly(oxytetramethylene). Crivello, J. V.; Lee, J. L. (Res. Dev. Cent., Gen. Electr. Corp., Schenectady, NY 12301, USA). Macromol. Synth., 9, 43-7 (English) 1985. CODEN: MASYAO. ISSN: 0076-2091. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Section cross-reference(s): 38 Photoinitiated cationic ring-opening polymn. of THF in the presence of (tert-Bu-p-C6H4)2I+PF6- (I) [61358-25-6] gave poly(tetramethylene oxide) (II) [25190-06-1] having intrinsic viscosity 4.5-5.0 dL/g (in C6H6) in 30-37.5% yield. Photoinitiator I was prepd. by treating tert-butylbenzene [98-06-6] with KIO3 and H2SO4 in AcOH/Ac2O to give an iodonium bisulfate intermediate, which was then treated with KPF6. II was pressed at 110-130° into a clear tough film which slowly became opaque on standing. Above its cryst. m.p. (55°), II became tough and elastomeric.
