DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 25 (Noncondensed Aromatic Compounds) Anilines I (R = NO2, H; R1 = H, Cl, SO2NH2) were diazotized and treated with SO2 and CuCl2 catalyst to yield the resp. benzenesulfonyl chlorides II, which are intermediates for the prepn. of N-substituted benzenesulfonamides useful as anticonvulsants and antiemetics. 4-Chlorophenol was nitrated, O-methylated, reduced, N-acetylated, nitrated, and deacetylated to give 5-chloro-2-methoxy-4-nitroaniline, and the latter was diazotized and treated with SO2 and CuCl2 to give II (R = NO2, R1 = Cl). .

Thus, 3.2 mol SOCl2 mixed with 1.6 mol ClSO3H at 50° was treated with 1.6 mol C6H6 over 4 h at 50° and the mixt. distd. to give 79% PhSO2Cl of 99.5% purity. Excess reactants were distd. and recycled; the HCl and SO2 by-products can be collected for further use.
