- Buckminsterfullerene, its siblings, and soot: Carriers of trapped inert gases in meteorites?. Heymann, D. (Dep. Geol. Geophys., Rice Univ., Houston, TX 77251, USA). J. Geophys. Res., B, 91(B13), E135-8 (English) 1986. CODEN: JJGBDU. ISSN: 0196-6936. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 53 (Mineralogical and Geological Chemistry) Three-dimensional, spheroidal structures of C atoms, Cn (n >40), can be made with 12 pentagons and (n/2)-10 hexagons. H. W. Kroto et al. (1985) showed that the mol. C60, called Buckminsterfullerene [99685-96-8], is esp. stable and that soot might be made of nuclei of Cn shells. Inert gas atoms might become trapped in such structures when they form by the condensation of C from a gas phase. S. Niemeyer and K. Marti (1981) showed that trapping occurs in condensing C and is attended by mass fractionation. The hypothesis of gas-trapping in Cn-shells and/or in soot particles derived from them might explain the thermal release patterns of trapped inert gases in acid-resistant residues of carbonaceous chondrites up to 31000°. Graphitization of the acid-resistant residues should occur on gas-release.
- Combustion synthesis of fullerenes
- Combustion synthesis of fullerenes. McKinnon, J. Thomas; Bell, William L.; Barkley, Robert M. (TDA Res., Inc., Wheat Ridge, CO 80033, USA). Combust. Flame, 88(1), 102-12 (English) 1992. CODEN: CBFMAO. ISSN: 0010-2180. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 24 (Alicyclic Compounds) The isolation of C60 and C70 from combustion soot produced in high-temp., low-pressure premixed flat flames is reported. A crit. 115383-22-7 and 99685-96-8 which are cas registry numbers are also used here. parameter for high fullerene yields in combustion appears to be a very high flame temp. Equil. calcns. indicate that low pressures are important, but the exptl. evidence is not clear. Combustion synthesis yields fullerenes with a C70/C60 ratio of ~40%, as compared with the 12% reported for elec.-arc-generated fullerenes. The overall yields from carbon are very low (ca. 0.03%), but the soot studied had been produced in flames that were in no way optimized for fullerene prodn. .
