General Description

1-{4-[bis(2-chloroethyl)amino]phenyl}urea, also known as chlorambucil, is a nitrogen mustard alkylating agent used primarily in the treatment of certain types of cancer, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It works by interfering with the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body. 1-{4-[bis(2-chloroethyl)amino]phenyl}urea is classified as an alkylating agent because it works by attaching alkyl groups (methyl or ethyl) to DNA, which prevents the cancer cells from reproducing and ultimately leads to their death. Chlorambucil is typically administered orally and is well-absorbed in the digestive system. However, it can also be given intravenously in certain situations. Common side effects of chlorambucil treatment include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and a decrease in blood cell count. Long-term use of chlorambucil can also lead to an increased risk of developing secondary cancers.
