General Description

1,1'-[ethylenebis(oxymethylene)]dipyridinium dichloride, also known as ethidium bromide, is a fluorescent dye commonly used in molecular biology techniques such as gel electrophoresis and nucleic acid staining. It is a highly mutagenic and carcinogenic compound that intercalates and binds to DNA, causing the DNA strands to become more fluorescent when exposed to ultraviolet light. Due to its toxic and hazardous nature, ethidium bromide must be handled with extreme caution and disposed of properly. Its mutagenic and carcinogenic effects make it a controversial choice for DNA staining and there are ongoing efforts to develop alternative, safer dyes for the same applications.
