General Description

Calcicludine is a peptide toxin that has been isolated from the venom of the green mamba snake. It belongs to the family of long-chain neurotoxins and targets voltage-gated calcium channels. Calcicludine has been found to specifically block the L-type calcium channels in neurons, which are involved in regulating neurotransmitter release and synaptic transmission. This blockade of calcium channels by calcicludine leads to a decrease in the release of neurotransmitters such as glutamate, ultimately affecting neuronal communication and synaptic plasticity. Due to its unique mode of action, calcicludine has potential applications in neuroscience research and may also serve as a template for the development of new therapeutic agents targeting calcium channels.
