Cu-doped KNbO3 single crystals are used in semiconductor laser technology because Cu doping results in electronic states with near-infrared absorption bands, enhancing their performance in this application.
Used in Nonlinear Optical Applications:
Due to its nonlinear optical properties, potassium niobate is used in various applications that require tunable coherent light, such as in the production of nanowires for optical devices.
Used in Structural Phase Transitions Research:
Potassium niobate undergoes a series of structural phase transitions upon cooling, making it an interesting material for studying phase transitions and their effects on material properties. At 435 °C, the crystal symmetry changes from cubic centrosymmetric (Pm3m) to tetragonal non-centrosymmetric (P4mm). On further cooling, at 225 °C the crystal symmetry changes from tetragonal (P4mm) to orthorhombic (Amm2), and at -50 °C from orthorhombic (Amm2) to rhombohedral (R3m). This characteristic makes it useful in research and development of materials with specific structural properties.
