Regioselective substitution of xanthone and its nucleophilic cleavage allow the synthesis of C-3 ohydroxyaryl substituted 1, 2-benzisoxazoles or their V-oxides by cyclodehydration or oxidative cyclization of their corresponding ketoxime precursors, respectively.
