Different catalysts are demonstrated to overcome or augment a substrate's innate regioselectivity. Nagasawa's bis-thiourea catalyst was found to overcome the innate para-selectivity of electrophilic phenol chlorination, yielding ortho-chlorinated phenols that are not readily obtainable via canonical electrophilic chlorinations.
