General Description

N,N,N',N'-Tetraphenylmethylenediamine, also known as Tetraphenylmethylenediamine or TPMDA, is a chemical compound used as a thermal stabilizer in the production of polyurethane foam and in the formation of other organic materials. It is a white to pale yellow crystalline powder with a melting point of 148-150°C and is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. TPMDA acts as an antioxidant and is added to polyurethane formulations to prevent degradation from heat, light, and oxygen exposure during the production process and in the final product. It is also used as a precursor in the synthesis of other organic compounds. TPMDA should be handled with care and proper safety measures as it may cause skin and eye irritation, and its dust can be harmful if inhaled.

N,N,N',N'-tetraphenyldiaminomethane, antioxidant for rubber, is prepared by reaction of 2 molar proportions of diphenylamine and 0.8-1.3 molar proportions of formaldehyde at room temperature. The reaction may be carried out in a storage container, for example a thermoplastic container which, holding the tetraphenyldiamonomethane, can be added to and will blend into a rubber mix.
