Complexes of 2,4-diamino-5-(3′,4′,5′-trimethoxybenzyl)pyrimidine (trimethoprim, TMP) with Ag(I), Zn(II), Cd(II), Hg(II) and Ni(II) have been prepared and characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, infrared and UV-Visible spectral and thermal data. Elemental analysis data show that the metal to ligand ratio is 1:1 in the Hg(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) complexes and 1:2 in the Ag(I) and Zn(II) complexes. The infrared data show that trimethoprim acts as a monodentate ligand coordinating through the 4-NH2 group of trimethoprim. Heats of fusion of the complexes have been calculated from the parameters of the DSC curves and the order of thermal stability of the complexes as deduced from the heat of fusion follows the trend: Ag(I) > Ni(II) > Hg(II) > Cd(II) > Zn(II).
