Butyl rubber, also known as isobutylene-isoprene rubber (IIR), is a synthetic rubber that is primarily composed of isobutylene with small amounts of isoprene. It is a copolymer manufactured through cationic vinyl polymerization. Notable for its excellent resistance to heat, oxidation, chemicals, and weathering, butyl rubber is widely used in applications that require an airtight environment such as tire inner tubes, seals, stoppers, and liners. Moreover, it has good ageing stability and low permeability to gases, making it suitable for the production of sporting and medical equipment.
