Usage

General Description

Amiodarone N-oxide is a metabolite of the antiarrhythmic drug amiodarone. It is formed in the body through the oxidation of amiodarone by cytochrome P450 enzymes, particularly CYP3A4 and CYP2C8. Like amiodarone, amiodarone N-oxide has antiarrhythmic properties and has been found to exhibit class III antiarrhythmic activity. This metabolite has a longer half-life compared to amiodarone, which may contribute to its prolonged effects within the body. However, it is also known to have potential toxic effects and can contribute to the adverse effects associated with amiodarone therapy, such as pulmonary toxicity, hepatotoxicity, and thyroid dysfunction. Therefore, monitoring of amiodarone N-oxide levels in patients undergoing amiodarone therapy may be important for minimizing the risk of toxicity.
