Methylenedisulphonylacetic acid condenses with aromatic aldehydes in the presence of amine catalysts to give methylsulphonylstyrylsulphonylmethane (IV) in preference to bis(styrylsulphonyl)methane (V) and 1,1-bis(methylsulphonyl)-2-phenylethylene (VI).Steric and polar interactions play important roles in deciding the product in this case. The structure of the disulphone (IV) has been established with the help of PMR and mass spectra data.
