8001-48-7 Usage

Description

Gambier is a tree native to Malaysia and cultivated in tropical countries. It is known for its yellow catechu, which is derived from the leaves of a Malaysian woody vine (yellow or pale catechu) by boiling or infusing them in water. The tree's parts used are the leaves and young branches, and the derivative is a coloring substance. Extracted from leaves and young branches, it consists of small (10 to 15 g) fragments that are externally reddish-brown and internally yellowish. The main constituents include tannic acid, quercetin, and coloring matter.

Uses

Used in Tanning Industry:
Gambier is used as a tanning agent for its astringent properties, which help in the process of turning animal hides into leather.
Used in Dyeing Industry:
Gambier is used as a dyeing agent for its coloring matter, which provides a natural color to fabrics and other materials.
Used in Chewing Betel Nuts:
Gambier is used as a chewing agent for betel nuts, providing a traditional and cultural experience in countries where it is consumed.
Used in Pharmaceutical Industry:
Gambier may have potential uses in the pharmaceutical industry due to the presence of tannic acid and quercetin, which have various medicinal properties. However, more research is needed to fully understand and harness these properties for pharmaceutical applications.

Essential oil composition

It contains catechic, epicatechic group along with anthocyanidol, which gives the characteristic reddishbrown shade of gambir. The alkaloids gambirdine and isogambirdine have been isolated from gambir.
