Preparation and Thermolysis of cis- and trans-1-Hydroxy-2-(2-pyridyl)cyclopentanes and cis- and trans-1-Hydroxy-2-(2-pyrazyl)cyclopentanes

The syntheses of cis- and trans-1-hydroxy-2-(2-pyridyl)cyclopentanes as well as cis- and trans-1-hydroxy-2-(2-pyrazyl)cyclopentanes have been carried out, and their stereochemical assignments were done by using IR and NMR data.The thermolyses of these pyrazylethanols and pyridylethanols have been studied in diglyme solutions at 170 deg C.While the pyrazylethanols mainly undergo dehydration, the pyridylethanols thermolyze via a much more complex reaction process.
