potassium fluoride usage and synthesis
physical and chemical properties potassium fluoride is basis raw material of manufacturing fluoride, chemical formula is kf. molecular weight is 58.10. it is colorless cubic crystal or white powder. it is poisonous! it is deliquescent. taste is salty. specific gravity is 2.48. melting point is 858℃. boiling point is 1505℃. it is soluble in water. it was dissolved in hydrofluoric acid and ammonia. it is insoluble in ethanol, acetone. aqueous solution is alkaline and it can corrode glass and porcelain. it can cause irritation for human skin, mucous membrane and eye. when belows 40.2℃, it can crystallize in an aqueous solution to give dihydrate kf·2h2o, which is monoclinic, it is self-dissolved crystalline water at 41℃. it can be obtained by the thermal decomposition of potassium hydrogen fluoride or potassium carbonate (or potassium hydroxide) and hydrofluoric acid (40% or anhydrous). it can be used for glass engraving, food preservation, it can be also used as welding flux, fluoride, pesticides, etc.

figure 1 the structural formula of potassium fluoride.
sodium fluoride and potassium fluoride sodium fluoride and potassium fluoride is white crystal having a rock-salt structure. sodium fluoride is indissolvable in water (100℃, 5g / 100ml water), and potassium fluoride is hygroscopic, it is easily dissolved in water (at 18℃ of 92.3g /100g water). potassium fluoride has dihydrate (mp41℃) and tetrahydrate (mp19.3℃).
sodium fluoride and potassium fluoride is different with other alkali halide salts (such as sodium chloride), it is alkaline, addition reaction with hydrogen fluoride is easy and can generate acid salt.
sodium fluoride and potassium fluoride can use sodium or potassium carbonate, respectively, it can be obtained by neutralization reaction with hydrofluoric acid by calculated amount, if the hydrofluoric acid is in excess, it will bring in acid salts (sodium acid nahf2 acid or potassium fluoride khf2).
k2co3 + 2hf → 2kf + h2o + co2 kf + hf → khf2.
sodium fluoride is prepared by reaction of sodium fluoride and sodium hydroxide solution in industry.
na2sif6 + 6naoh → 6naf + na2sio3 + 3h2o
sodium fluoride is the most affordable of the alkali metal fluoride, it can be used as adsorbent of hydrogen fluoride in atomic energy industry and other aspects for it has the capable of forming an acid salt with hydrogen fluoride.
when potassium fluoride and sodium fluoride compares, it is more easily dissociated in various solvents. due to it is ease to generate fluoride ions (f-) and therefore it can be used as the organic fluorinating agent, especially with the halogen exchange fluorination reagent.
rcl + kf → rf + kcl
and more recently for taking use of fluoride ions strongly bound with hydrogen ions, it can be used in organic reaction with potassium fluoride for gradually condensing agent use.
potassium hydrogen fluoride potassium hydrogen fluoride is known as "potassium hydrogen fluoride", "acid potassium fluoride," "heavy potassium fluoride" it is hydrofluoric acid salt. chemical formula is khf2. molecular weight is 78.11. it is colorless isometric system crystal, it is easy deliquescence. it is toxic! the relative density is 2.369g /cm3. it is easy soluble in water, it is soluble in potassium acetate, it is not soluble in ethanol. aqueous solution is acidic, it is strongly corrosive for glass and ceramics. it can decompose when be heated to about 225℃. it can absorb moisture and release hydrogen fluoride in the humid air.
method: it can be derived when potassium hydroxide or potassium carbonate react with sufficient amount hydrofluoric acid, or adds hydrofluoric acid into saturated solution of potassium fluoride, and controls the terminal ph 2 to 3.
uses: electrolysis of molten potassium hydrogen fluoride can obtain fluorine. it can be used for manufacturing fluoride and fluorine, carved glass, also used as masking agent, metallurgical flux, preservatives industry.
the above information is edited by the chemicalbook of wang xiaodong.
solubility in water (g/100ml) the gram which dissolves per 100 ml of water at different temperatures (℃):
44.7g / 0 ℃; 53.5g / 10 ℃; 94.9g / 20 ℃; 108g / 30 ℃; 138g / 40 ℃
142g / 60 ℃; 150g / 80 ℃
toxicity this product is toxic, ld50 is 245mg / kg. it has irritation for skin, eyes, mucous membrane. the operator must wear protective equipment. specific protective measures refer to aluminum fluoride.
chemical properties it is colorless cubic crystal. it is deliquescence. it is easily soluble in water, it is soluble in hydrofluoric acid and liquid ammonia, it is slightly soluble in alcohol and acetone. aqueous solution is alkaline.
application it can be used for variety of glass etching, welding flux, wood preservatives, agricultural pesticides and pesticide intermediates, pharmaceutical raw materials industry, as well as fluorinated organic material.
production method neutralizational process: with equal amount of water to dissolve the solid potassium hydroxide in the pool, and then passes into the anhydrous hydrofluoric acid (hf or 40%) to react, until to ph = 7 ~ 8, stops inletting anhydrous hydrofluoric acid, static sedimentation 24h, then sends the resulting clear solution (about 40% fluorine potassium) to the vacuum evaporator and concentrates in vacuo (pressure 79993 pa), when solution has most crystals, it is contained in the solution, after filtration (pressure 0.2 ~ 0.3 mpa), and dried in vacuo (pressure 79993 pa) 6h to obtain the finished product of potassium fluoride.
koh + hf → kf + h2o
chemical properties white solid
usage a versatile fluoride ion source used in a study of ion-specific swelling and de-swelling of ampholytic polymer gels,3 in the room temperature oxidation of noble metals in hf,4 and in the measurement of electronic polarizabilities of ions in polymers of alkali halides.5
general description white powder or crystals with a sharp saline taste. shipped as a solid or an aqueous solution. strongly irritates skin, eyes and mucous membranes. toxic by ingestion. used in insecticides, solder flux and etching glass.
air & water reactions deliquescent. water soluble.
reactivity profile potassium fluoride reacts with acids to evolve corrosive and toxic hydrogen fluoride. aqueous solutions corrode glass and consequently are prepared and stored in polyethylene containers. the pure solid may be stored in glass containers. reacts violently with (pt + brf3). [ntp 1992].
health hazard toxic; inhalation, ingestion or skin contact with material may cause severe injury or death. contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes. avoid any skin contact. effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.
fire hazard non-combustible, substance itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive and/or toxic fumes. some are oxidizers and may ignite combustibles (wood, paper, oil, clothing, etc.). contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas. containers may explode when heated.
