Transition-metal-free decarboxylative halogenation of 2-picolinic acids with dihalomethane under oxygen conditions
A convenient and efficient method for the synthesis of 2-halogen-substituted pyridines is described. The decarboxylative halogenation of 2-picolinic acids with dihalomethane proceeded smoothly via N-chlorocarbene intermediates to afford 2-halogen-substituted pyridines in satisfactory to excellent yields under transition-metal-free conditions. This new type of decarboxylative halogenation is operationally simple and exhibits high functional-group tolerance.

Synthesis of novel halopyridinylboronic acids and esters. Part 1: 6-Halopyridin-3-yl-boronic acids and esters
This paper describes a general method for the synthesis and isolation of novel 6-halo-pyridin-3-yl-boronic acids and esters 2-5. These compounds are prepared taking in account a regioselective halogen-metal exchange with a trialkylborate starting from 2,5-dihalopyridines. All substrates studied to date provided a single regioisomeric boronic acid or ester product. Additionally, these compounds have been found to undergo Pd-catalysed coupling with a range of arylhalides and authorise a strategy to produce new pyridines libraries.

Surprising substituent effects on the self-assembly of helicates from bis(bipyridyl) BINOL ligands
(Figure Presented) A number of different bis(bipyridyl) BINOL ligands were prepared using a convergent building block approach. These were studied with regard to their ability to undergo self-assembly to dinuclear helicates upon coordination to suitable late-transition-metal ions. Surprisingly, the substituents at the periphery of the ligand structure were found to have a marked influence on the outcome of the self-assembly processes with regard to the helicates composition, the stereoselectivity of the helicate formation, their redox reactivity, and their electronical properties as scrutinized by NMR- and CD-spectroscopic methods as well as ESI-mass spectrometric methods.

External-Photocatalyst-Free Visible-Light-Mediated Synthesis of Indolizines
A visible-light-mediated synthesis of valuable polycyclic indolizine heterocycles from easily accessed brominated pyridine and enol carbamate derivatives has been developed. This process, which operates at room temperature under irradiation from readily available light sources, does not require the addition of an external photocatalyst. Instead, an investigation into the reaction mechanism indicates that the indolizine products themselves may be in some way involved in mediating and accelerating their own formation. Preliminary studies also show that these simple heterocyclic compounds may be capable of facilitating other visible-light-mediated transformations.

Triarylbismuthanes as threefold aryl-transfer reagents in regioselective cross-coupling reactions with bromopyridines and quinolines
Cross-coupling studies using bromopyridines and bromoquinolines with triarylbismuths as threefold coupling reagents in substoichiometric amounts under Pd-catalysed conditions are disclosed. The reactivity was high with both mono- and dibromopyridyl substrates, and mono- and bis-couplings were carried out regioselectively. A library of monoaryl and diaryl pyridines was formed in high yields. A one-pot strategy provided a simple and straightforward synthesis of both symmetrical and unsymmetrical diarylpyridines. Arylations of 2-bromo- and 3-bromoquinolines were achieved with triarylbismuth reagents. This study demonstrates that triarylbismuths may be used as threefold arylating reagents for the synthesis of aryl pyridines and quinolines through couplings with bromopyridines and bromoquinolines under Pd-catalysed conditions. Role of substitution on the photophysical properties of 5,5′-diaryl-2,2′-bipyridine (bpy*) in [Ir(ppy) 2(bpy*)]PF6 complexes: A combined experimental and theoretical study
The synthesis of a family of 4′-functionalized 5,5′-diaryl-2, 2′-bipyridines (bpy*; 6a-6g) is reported. These ligands were reacted with the dimer [(ppy)2IrCl]2 (ppyH = 2-phenylpyridine) and afforded, after subsequent counterion exchange, a new series of luminescent cationic heteroleptic iridium(III) complexes, [(ppy)2Ir(bpy*)] PF6 (8a-8g). These complexes were characterized by electrochemical and spectroscopic methods. The crystal structures of two of these complexes (8a and 8g) are reported. All of the complexes except for 8c and 8f exhibit intense and long-lived emission in both 2-MeTHF and ACN at 77 K and room temperature. The origin of this emission has been assigned by computational modeling to be an admixture of ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer [3LLCT; π(ppy) → π*(bpy*)] and metal-to-ligand charge-transfer [ 3MLCT; dπ(Ir) → π*(bpy*)] excited states that are primarily composed of the former. The luminescent properties for 8a-8c are dependent upon the functionalization at the 4′ position of the aryl substituents affixed to the diimine ligand, while those for 8d-8g are essentially independent because of an electronic decoupling of the aryls and bpy due to the substitution of o,o-dimethyl groups on the aryls, causing a near 90° angle between the aryl and bipyridyl moieties. A combined density functional theory (DFT)/time-dependent DFT study was conducted in order to understand the origin of the transitions in the absorption and emission spectra and to predict accurately emission energies for these complexes.

Synthesis and helicate formation of a new family of binol-based bis(bipyridine) ligands
A new family of BINOL-based bis(bipyridine) ligands 1-3 (BINOL = 2,2 -dihydroxy-1,1 -binaphthyl) was prepared in enantiomerically pure form. Whereas the coordination of zinc(ll) ions to these ligands did not result in the selective formation of a specific metallosupramolecular aggregate,1 -3 were found to undergo highly diastereoselective self-assembly to D 2-symmetric dinuclear double-stranded helicates upon coordin ation to silver(l) and copper(l) ions and to D3-symmetric dinuclear triple-stranded helicates upon coordination to iron(ll) as demonstrated by mass spectrometry and by NMR and CD spectroscopy in combination with quantum chemical calculations.

Synthesis and mutagenic potency of structural isomers of 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine
(Chemical Equation Presented) Synthesis of 2-amino-1-methyl-6- phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP), three structural isomers, and two desphenyl PhIP congeners has been carried out. Mutagenic potency was evaluated using S. typhimurium strain TA98 in the Ames test. Mutagenic potency increased in relation to structural features in these heterocyclic amines that allow extended resonance between the phenyl and imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine N2-amino substituents. By contrast, PhIP isomers, whose substitution disallows involvement of the phenyl group in their ammoimidazo resonance hybrids, and desphenyl congeners were from 86- to 234-fold less mutagenic than PhIP.

A Convenient Palladium-Catalyzed Coupling Approach to 2,5-Disubstituted Pyridines
2,5-Dibromopyridine has been found to undergo a regioselective palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction with terminal acetylenes and arylzinc halides to give the corresponding 2-alkynyl-5-bromo- and 2-aryl-5-bromopyridines, respectively, in 70percent-90percent isolated yields.To complement this chemistry, the triflate derived from 2-methyl-5-pyridinol was found to participate in a palladium-catalyzed reaction with terminal acetylenes leading to the corresponding 5-alkynyl-2-methylpyridines.These intermediates can be further manipulated to afford a broad range of 2,5-disubstituted pyridines.
