The three title compounds [(η4-C6H5CH=CH)CH(Ar)N(C6H 5)C(OC2H6)=]Fe(CO)2 (2, Ar = C6H5; 3, Ar = m-CH3C6H4; 4, Ar = p-CF3C6H4) have been prepared, by the reaction of (cinnamaldehyde anil)iron tricarbonyl, (η4-C6H5CH=CHCH=NC6H 5)Fe(CO)3 (1), with an aryllithium reagent in ether at low temperature, followed by the alkylation of the adducts formed with Et2OBF4 in aqueous solution at 0°C. Compound 2 reacted with the Lewis bases PPh3, P(OPh)3, AsPh3, CH3CN, PhCH2NH2, and 4-vinylpyridine to give six chelated η2-olefin carbene complexes (5-10). These new compounds are characterized by elemental analyses and IR, 1H NMR, and mass spectra; one has been characterized by X-ray diffraction: [(η4-C6H5CH=CH)CH(m-CH3C 6H4)N(C6H5)C(OC2H 5)=]Fe(CO)2·1/2C6H5CH 3, monoclinic, space group C52h-P21/c with unit cell constants a = 12.457 (3) A′, b = 10.560 (2) A′, c = 20.072(4)A′, β = 96.63 (2)°, V = 2622.71 A′3, and Z = 4; R = 0.047 for 3239 reflections with Fo2 ≥ 3σ(Fo)2. The 1H NMR spectral data of 2-4 and the results of an X-ray structure analysis for 3 show that the benzene ring of the styrene is coordinated to the iron atom with a double bond in the complexes 2-4 and shows alternating long and short bond lengths.
