Triazole-pyridine ligands: A novel approach to chromophoric iridium arrays
We describe a novel modular approach to a series of luminescent iridium complexes bearing triazole-pyridine-derived ligands that were conveniently prepared by using "click" chemistry. One, two or three triazole-pyridine units were effectively built into the heteroaromatic macromolecule using versatile acetylene- and azide-functionalised precursors. Using this approach, a series of iridium-derived molecules, that differ in the number of iridium centres, the structural characteristics of the cyclometalating ligand and the backbone, were synthesised. The preliminary photophysical properties of the prepared complexes indicate that there is only limited interaction (through space or through the backbone) between the iridium centres within one molecule and that each iridium centre retains its individual properties. The results show that our approach can be generally applied towards covalently linked multichromophoric systems with potential application, for instance, in the design and preparation of tunable light emitters. As a demonstration of this concept, a single molecule white-light emitter, constructed from two iridium centres (yellow emission) and a fluorene unit (blue emission), is presented. N -Heterocyclic donor- and acceptor-type ligands based on 2-(1 H -[1,2,3]Triazol-4-yl)pyridines and their ruthenium(II) complexes
New 2-(1H-[1,2,3]triazol-4-yl)pyridine bidentate ligands were synthesized as bipyridine analogs, whereas different phenylacetylene moieties of donor and acceptor nature were attached at the 5-position of the pyridine unit. The latter moieties featured a crucial influence on the electronic properties of those ligands. The N-heterocyclic ligands were coordinated to ruthenium(II) metal ions by using a bis(4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) precursor. The donor or acceptor capability of the 2-(1H-[1,2,3]triazol-4-yl) pyridine ligands determined the quantum yield of the resulting ruthenium(II) complexes remarkably. Separately, 2-([1,2,3]triazol-4-yl)pyridine ligands are known to be potential quenchers, but using these new ligand systems led to room temperature emission of the corresponding ruthenium(II) complexes. The compounds have been fully characterized by elemental analysis, high-resolution ESI mass spectrometry, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. Theoretical calculations for two ruthenium(II) complexes bearing a donor and acceptor unit, respectively, were performed to gain a deeper understanding of the photophysical behavior.

High-efficiency solution processable electrophosphorescent iridium complexes bearing polyphenylphenyl dendron ligands
We report the synthesis and electrophosphorescent behavior of a series of novel iridium complex materials (Complexes A-F), which are composed of ligands bearing polyphenylphenyl dendron groups and acetylacetonate. Yellow to saturated red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on these newly developed Ir complexes were fabricated through solution process by doping the complex materials into polyvinyl carbazole (PVK)/2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) matrices. The emission wavelengths of the materials could be effectively tuned from 549 nm to 640 nm by changing the conjugation of the ligands either through incorporating additional aromatic segment (e.g. phenyl or fluorenyl group) onto the basic dendron ligand or fusing two of the phenyl rings on the polyphenylphenyl dendron group. High performance devices with the configuration of ITO/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) (50 nm)/PVK:PBD (40%):Ir complex (6%) (70 nm)/2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BCP) (12 nm)/Alq3 (20 nm)/Mg:Ag (150 nm) have been demonstrated. For example, when Complex B was used as the emissive layer, maximum current efficiency of 34.0 cd/A and external quantum efficiency of 10.3% have been achieved. When 1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl) benzene (TPBI) was used as the block layer, the efficiencies can be further improved to 46.3 cd/A and 13.9%, respectively. These solution processed OLED devices demonstrated quite stable EL efficiencies over a large range of current density, which indicated that triplet-triplet annihilation in electrophosphorescence could be effectively suppressed by incorporation of the polyphenylphenyl dendron structure into iridium complexes.

5-(3-Bromophenyl)-7-(6-morpholin-4-ylpyridin-3-yl)pyrido[2,3-d] pyrimidin-4-ylamine: Structure-activity relationships of 7-substituted heteroaryl analogs as non-nucleoside adenosine kinase inhibitors
4-Amino-5,7-disubstituted pyridopyrimidines are potent, non-nucleoside inhibitors of adenosine kinase (AK). We recently identified a potent, orally efficacious analog, 4 containing a 7-pyridylmorpholine substituted ring system as the key structural element of this template. In this report, we disclose the pharmacologic effects of five- and six-membered heterocyclic ring replacements for the pyridine ring in 4. These replacements were found to have interesting effects on in vivo efficacy and genotoxicity as well as in vitro potency. We discovered that the nitrogen in the heterocyclic ring at C(7) is important for the modulation of mutagenic side effects (Ames assay).

Improved and new syntheses of potential molecular electronics devices
New syntheses of ethyl and nitro substituted oligo(phenylene ethynylene)s (OPEs) have been developed. To further explore whether the presence of nitro functionality in OPEs leads to switching and memory capabilities, new nitro substituted OPEs have been designed and synthesized. An isatogen-based system, a structure that is isomeric to the nitro OPE, has been synthesized. Additionally, pyridine-based and chromium-based compounds have been synthesized. We surmise that redox reactions of these candidates may impart switching capabilities and electrochemical studies are shown. U-shaped OPEs were synthesized to inhibit leakage of metals deposited during formation of top contacts on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The OPEs contain either thiol-based moieties or isonitrile groups to enable formation of SAMs on metal substrates.

Synthesis and preliminary testing of molecular wires and devices
Presented here are several convergent synthetic routes to conjugated oligo(phenylene ethynylene)s. Some of these oligomers are free of functional groups, while others possess donor groups, acceptor groups, porphyrin interiors, and other heterocyclic interiors for various potential transmission and digital device applications. The syntheses of oligo(phenylene ethynylene)s with a variety of end groups for attachment to numerous metal probes and surfaces are presented. Some of the functionalized molecular systems showed linear, wire-like, current versus voltage (I(V)) responses, while others exhibited nonlinear I(V) curves for negative differential resistance (NDR) and molecular random access memory effects. Finally, the syntheses of functionalized oligomers are described that can form self-assembled monolayers on metallic electrodes that reduce the Schottky barriers. Information from the Schottky barrier studies can provide useful insight into molecular alligator clip optimizations for molecuar electronics.

A Convenient Palladium-Catalyzed Coupling Approach to 2,5-Disubstituted Pyridines
2,5-Dibromopyridine has been found to undergo a regioselective palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction with terminal acetylenes and arylzinc halides to give the corresponding 2-alkynyl-5-bromo- and 2-aryl-5-bromopyridines, respectively, in 70percent-90percent isolated yields.To complement this chemistry, the triflate derived from 2-methyl-5-pyridinol was found to participate in a palladium-catalyzed reaction with terminal acetylenes leading to the corresponding 5-alkynyl-2-methylpyridines.These intermediates can be further manipulated to afford a broad range of 2,5-disubstituted pyridines.
