α-METHYLENE AND α-METHYL-δ-LACTONES THROUGH THE CONDENSATION OF α-METHYLENE-γ-SULPHINYLBUTYRIC ACID ON CARBONYL ELECTROPHILES
When treated with lithium diisopropylamide 2-methylene-4-(4-methylphenyl)sulphinylbutyric acid is metallated in the position α to the sulphinyl group. The dianion obtained gives α-methylene-γ-sulphinyl-δ-hydroxycarboxylic acids with aldehydes and ketones.C
