- A synthetic approach to dimetalated arenes using flow microreactors and the switchable application to chemoselective cross-coupling reactions
-
In spite of their potential utility, the chemistry of dimetalated arenes is still in its infancy because they are extremely difficult to synthesize. We report a novel method of synthesizing arenes bearing a boryl group and a metallic substituent, such as boryl, silyl, stannyl, or zincyl groups, in an integrated flow microreactor based on the generation and reactions of aryllithiums bearing a trialkyl borate moiety. The bimetallic arenes showed a remarkable chemoselectivity in palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. The selectivity was switched by the selection of the metal species that constitutes the dimetalated arenes as well as appropriate catalysts.

- Tetrabenzo[8]circulene: Aromatic saddles from negatively curved graphene
-
An aromatic saddle was designed from the hypothetical three-dimensional graphene with the negative Gaussian curvature (Schwarzite P192). Two aromatic saddles, tetrabenzo[8]circulene (TB8C) and its octamethyl derivative OM-TB8C, were synthesized by the Scholl reaction of cyclic octaphenylene precursors. The structure of TB8C greatly deviates from planarity, and the deep saddle shape was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. There are two conformers with the S4 symmetry, which are twisted compared to the DFT structure (D2d). The theoretical studies propose that the interconversion of TB8C via the planar transition state (125 kcal mol-1) is not possible. However, the pseudorotation leads to a low-energy tub-to-tub inversion via the nonplanar transition state (7.3 kcal mol-1). The ground-state structure of TB8C in solution is quite different from the X-ray structure because of the crystal-packing force and low-energy pseudorotation. OM-TB8C is a good electron donor and works as the p-type semiconductor.

- Unreactive C-N Bond Activation of Anilines via Photoinduced Aerobic Borylation
-
Unreactive C-N bond activation of anilines was achieved by photoinduced aerobic borylation. A diverse range of tertiary and secondary anilines were converted to aryl boronate esters in moderate to good yields with wide functional group tolerance under simple and ambient photochemical conditions. This transformation achieved the direct and facile C-N bond activation of unreactive anilines, providing a convenient and practical route transforming widely available anilines into useful aryl boronate esters.

- Azimuthal Dipolar Rotor Arrays on Surfaces
-
A set of dipolar molecular rotor compounds was designed, synthesized and adsorbed as self-assembled 2D arrays on Ag(111) surfaces. The title molecules are constructed from three building blocks: (a) 4,8,12-trioxatriangulene (TOTA) platforms that are known to physisorb on metal surfaces such as Au(111) and Ag(111), (b) phenyl groups attached to the central carbon atom that function as pivot joints to reduce the barrier to rotation, (c) pyridine and pyridazine units as small dipolar units on top. Theoretical calculations and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) investigations hint at the fact that the dipoles of neighboring rotors interact through space through pairs of energetically favorable head-to-tail arrangements.

- Carbon-carbon bond activation by B(OMe)3/B2pin2-mediated fragmentation borylation
-
Selective carbon-carbon bond activation is important in chemical industry and fundamental organic synthesis, but remains challenging. In this study, non-polar unstrained Csp2-Csp3 and Csp2-Csp2 bond activation was achieved by B(OMe)3/B2pin2-mediated fragmentation borylation. Various indole derivatives underwent C2-regioselective C-C bond activation to afford two C-B bonds under transition-metal-free conditions. Preliminary mechanistic investigations suggested that C-B bond formation and C-C bond cleavage probably occurred in a concerted process. This new reaction mode will stimulate the development of reactions based on inert C-C bond activation. This journal is

- Cross-Coupling through Ag(I)/Ag(III) Redox Manifold
-
In ample variety of transformations, the presence of silver as an additive or co-catalyst is believed to be innocuous for the efficiency of the operating metal catalyst. Even though Ag additives are required often as coupling partners, oxidants or halide scavengers, its role as a catalytically competent species is widely neglected in cross-coupling reactions. Most likely, this is due to the erroneously assumed incapacity of Ag to undergo 2e? redox steps. Definite proof is herein provided for the required elementary steps to accomplish the oxidative trifluoromethylation of arenes through AgI/AgIII redox catalysis (i. e. CEL coupling), namely: i) easy AgI/AgIII 2e? oxidation mediated by air; ii) bpy/phen ligation to AgIII; iii) boron-to-AgIII aryl transfer; and iv) ulterior reductive elimination of benzotrifluorides from an [aryl-AgIII-CF3] fragment. More precisely, an ultimate entry and full characterization of organosilver(III) compounds [K]+[AgIII(CF3)4]? (K-1), [(bpy)AgIII(CF3)3] (2) and [(phen)AgIII(CF3)3] (3), is described. The utility of 3 in cross-coupling has been showcased unambiguously, and a large variety of arylboron compounds was trifluoromethylated via [AgIII(aryl)(CF3)3]? intermediates. This work breaks with old stereotypes and misconceptions regarding the inability of Ag to undergo cross-coupling by itself.

- Light-Induced Gold-Catalyzed Hiyama Arylation: A Coupling Access to Biarylboronates
-
Organoboron compounds are versatile synthetic building blocks. We herein report a new strategy, a photochemical gold-catalyzed chemo-selective Hiyama arylation of B,Si bifunctionalized reagents with diazonium salts, which is orthogonal to common strategies and therefore a unique tool for synthesis of valuable biarylboronates. With this new methodology a wide array of diversely functionalized sp2- and sp3-hybridized biarylboronates were obtained. Notably, the synergism of gold catalysis with copper catalysis or palladium catalysis, allows for one-pot iterative C?X (heteroatom) and C?C couplings for the rapid assembly of several simple fragments to relatively complex molecules. Mechanistic studies indicated that photosensitizer-free conditions were superior to gold/Ru(bpy)3Cl2 dual catalysis.

- Palladium-Catalyzed ipso-Borylation of Aryl Sulfides with Diborons
-
A catalytic Miyaura-type ipso-borylation of aryl sulfides with diboron reagents has been achieved, providing arylboronate esters of synthetic use. The key conditions to transform inherently reluctant C-S bonds into C-B bonds include a palladium-NHC (N-heterocyclic carbene) precatalyst, bis(pinacolato)diboron, and lithium hexamethyldisilazide. This protocol is applicable to a reasonable range of aryl alkyl sulfides. Twofold borylation was observed in the reaction of diphenyl sulfide.

- Efficient Rh-catalyzed C-H borylation of arene derivatives under photochemical conditions
-
Photocatalysis allows innovations in organic synthesis. Among the various catalytic reactions, CH-functionalizations offer valuable possibilities for the refinement of easily available building blocks. In this respect, catalytic borylation is of interest, too. So far, most of the catalytic borylation reactions are performed under thermal conditions at comparably high temperatures. Here, we describe a new synthetic route for efficient borylation reactions of arenes using a photocatalytic pathway. This novel approach allows the synthesis of a broad variety of borylated arenes and heteroarenes under mild conditions. Applying trans-[Rh(PMe3)2(CO)Cl] as an active photocatalyst and HBPin as an boron source, we achieved high TON. A catalytic cycle that relies on a Rh(i)-Rh(iii) interconversion is proposed.

- Para -C-H borylation of benzene derivatives by a bulky iridium catalyst
-
A highly para-selective aromatic C-H borylation has been accomplished. By a new iridium catalyst bearing a bulky diphosphine ligand, Xyl-MeO-BIPHEP, the C-H borylation of monosubstituted benzenes can be affected with para-selectivity up to 91%. This catalytic system is quite different from the usual iridium catalysts that cannot distinguish meta- and para-C-H bonds of monosubstituted benzene derivatives, resulting in the preferred formation of meta-products. The para-selectivity increases with increasing bulkiness of the substituent on the arene, indicating that the regioselectivity of the present reaction is primarily controlled by steric repulsion between substrate and catalyst. Caramiphen, an anticholinergic drug used in the treatment of Parkinsons disease, was converted into five derivatives via our para-selective borylation. The present [Ir(cod)OH]2/Xyl-MeO-BIPHEP catalyst represents a unique, sterically controlled, para-selective, aromatic C-H borylation system that should find use in streamlined, predictable chemical synthesis and in the rapid discovery and optimization of pharmaceuticals and materials.

- Precise control of intramolecular charge-transport: The interplay of distance and conformational effects
-
A new series of donor-bridge-acceptor (D-B-A) compounds consisting of π-conjugated oligofluorene (oFL) bridges between a ferrocene (Fc) electron-donor and a fullerene (C60) electron-acceptor have been synthesized. In addition to varying the length of the bridge (i.e., mono- and bi-fluorene derivatives), four different ways of linking ferrocene to the bridge have been examined. The Fc moiety is linked to oFL: 1) directly without any spacer, 2) by an ethynyl linkage, 3) by a vinylene linkage, and 4) by a p-phenylene unit. The electronic interactions between the electroactive species have been characterized by cyclic voltammetry, absorption, fluorescence, and transient absorption spectroscopy in combination with quantum chemical calculations. The calculations reveal exceptionally close energy-matching between the Fc and the oFL units, which results in strong electronic-coupling. Hence, intramolecular charge-transfer may easily occur upon exciting either the oFLs or Fcs. Photoexcitation of Fc-oFL-C60 conjugates results in transient radical-ion-pair states. The mode of linkage of the Fc and FL bridge has a profound effect on the photophysical properties. Whereas intramolecular charge-separation is found to occur rather independently of the distance, the linker between Fc and oFL acts (at least in oFL) as a bottleneck and significantly impacts the intramolecular charge-separation rates, resulting in beta values between βCS 0.08 and 0.19 A-1. In contrast, charge recombination depends strongly on the electron-donor-acceptor distance, but not at all on the linker. A value of βCR (0.35±0.01 A-1) was found for all the systems studied. Oligofluorenes prove, therefore, to be excellent bridges for probing how small structural variations affect charge transport in D-B-A systems. Finely tuned transfer: Chemical modification of the oligo-fluorene linkers between Fc and C60 units enables fine-tuning of photoinduced charge-transfer processes in new donor-bridge-acceptor conjugates (see illustration).
