- A tetraphenylethylene-functionalized benzoxazine and copper(II) acetylacetonate form a high-performance polybenzoxazine
-
In this study, we synthesized TPE-BZ, a new tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-functionalized benzoxazine (BZ) monomer (1,1,2,2-tetrakis(3-phenyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[e] [1,3]oxazin-6-yl)ethane), through reduction of the Schiff base formed from TPE-4OH–CHO (1,1,2,2-tetra(3-formyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)ethylene) and aniline and subsequent reaction with paraformaldehyde. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry confirmed the structure of the TPE-BZ monomer. We used differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), FTIR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to investigate the thermal ring opening polymerization (ROP) and thermal stability of the TPE-BZ monomer after thermal treatment at various temperatures (from room temperature to 250 °C). The TGA profiles revealed that thermal treatment at 250 °C under a N2 atmosphere gave a poly(TPE-BZ) that possessed excellent thermal stability and a high char yield (435 °C, 64.3 wt%). Furthermore, water contact angle measurements of the poly(TPE-BZ) obtained at 210 °C for 2 h indicated a relatively low surface free energy (18.6 mJ m?2), presumably because of strong intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the phenolic OH groups and the N-Mannich bridge in the polybenzoxazine matrix. We also employed DSC, FTIR spectroscopy, and TGA to examine the specific interactions in TPE-BZ/Cu(acac)2 complexes. DSC analysis revealed that blending the TPE-BZ monomer with various weight ratios of Cu(acac)2 lowered the thermal curing temperature of TPE-BZ from 250 to 239 °C, accompanied by a lower curing temperature at 189 °C. Using the Kissinger method, the activation energy of the TPE-BZ/Cu(acac)2 complex (127 kJ mol?1) was lower than that of the TPE-BZ monomer (141 kJ mol?1), suggesting that Cu(acac)2 functioned as a catalyst that initiated ROP of the oxazine units, while providing a product that retained high thermal stability.

- Circularly polarized luminescence based on columnar self-assembly of tetraphenylethylene with multiple cholesterol units
-
The influence of different states of AIE derivative with columnar liquid crystalline phase on circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) was investigated in this work. Two novel tetraphenylethylene derivatives with multiple cholesterol units (TPE-C and TPE-SC) were prepared. They exhibited enantiotropic liquid crystalline behaviours with the ordered hexagonal columnar mesophase. They possessed excellent AIE properties in H2O-THF system. The fluorescence quantum yields of TPE-C and TPE-SC at solid state were as high as 28.8% and 22.6%, respectively. The chiral transfer from cholesterol units to TPE cores was confirmed by CD spectra. The studies on CPL spectra suggested that their CPL behaviors were tuned by the different states. They showed weak CPL properties at solid and isotropic state but strong CPL luminescence at liquid crystalline phase based on the orderly columnar self-assembly. The glum of TPE-SC at liquid crystalline phase reached 8.83 × 10?2.

- Selective detection of nitrite ion by an AIE-active tetraphenylethene dye through a reduction step in aqueous media
-
This paper reports a highly selective nitrite ion receptor based on an AIE-active tetraphenylethene-bearing amino functionality. In water, the receptor has been shown to be selective for nitrite ion (NO2-) over other anions (NO2-, CH3COO-, NO3-, CO32-, S2O32-, SO42-, HSO3-, and Cl-), with pronounced changes in absorption characteristics i.e. red-shift of ~30 nm. The visual observation of colour change, shift in absorption, and enhancement of emission, clearly show that this receptor is very selective and sensitive to nitrite ions.

- Intriguingly tuning the fluorescence of AIEgen using responsive polyelectrolyte microspheres
-
In this study, we present a practical approach to tune the fluorescence of AIEgen (the luminogens exhibiting AIE attributes) based on counterion-sensitive polyelectrolyte microspheres. The tunable fluorescence is induced by counterion-driven interactions in polyelectrolyte microspheres by a simple exchange of the counterions. The effects of different types of opposite counterions on the fluorescent properties of a new polyelectrolyte tetraphenylethene-graft-poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)-ethyltrimethylammonium chloride] (TPE-PMETAC), which was synthesized by Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) using a TPE derivative containing four arms as an initiator, were systematically investigated. For cationic microspheres with quaternary ammonium groups, the fluorescence intensity progressively increased according to the counterion series Cl? 4? 6? ?, which is in accord with the ability of exchanged hydrophilic Cl? by hydrophobic anions in the order of ClO4? 6? ?. The mechanism of tuning fluorescence was determined by dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta-potentials and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We proved that the size of the microspheres and electrostatic repulsive forces between the microspheres were decreased by the addition of counterions due to the hydrophobic-induced collapse of the surfaces of the microspheres. As a result, the obvious increase in the fluorescence of AIEgen was obtained based on the aggregation of microspheres.

- Insights into the general and efficient cross McMurry reactions between ketones
-
The selective cross McMurry couplings of diaryl or aryl ketones with various substituted ketones were achieved in 53-94% isolated yields. It is believed that the strong affinity of the substituents to the low-valent titanium surface plays an important role in regards to moderating selectivity. Through the introduction of such substituents followed by their removal post McMurry coupling, structurally similar ketones can be effectively cross-coupled.
