A novel trigeminal zinc porphyrin and corresponding porphyrin monomers for dye-sensitized solar cells
A novel trigeminal zinc porphyrin sensitizer (T) and two zinc porphyrin monomers (M1 and M2) were successfully designed and synthesized. The spectral, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of the porphyrin dyes were investigated. Compared with M1, the molecule of M2 has an additional aliphatic n-hexyloxyl chain at the meso-position of the porphyrin framework, and such a structure is favorable for the formation of a compact hydrophobic layer at the TiO2 surface and the retardation of the diffusion of I 3- ions into the nanoporous TiO2 electrode, resulting in more effective suppression of the charge recombination process and a higher Voc. Meanwhile, M2 has larger IPCE values than those of M1, leading to the higher Jsc value. Thus, the DSSC devices based on M2 demonstrated a relatively high power conversion efficiency of 5.77%, with the Jsc, Voc and ff values of 13.93 mA cm-2, 732 mV, and 0.566, respectively. Even though dye T has the highest molar absorption coefficients and multiple binding moieties, the corresponding power conversion efficiency is 2.30%, which is lower than those for M1 and M2. These observations may be ascribed to the low efficiency of the electron injection process caused by the isolation of the LUMOs from the anchoring carboxyl groups in addition to the lowest adsorption amount.

Probing the Hydrophobic Binding Pocket of G-Protein-Coupled Lysophosphatidylserine Receptor GPR34/LPS1 by Docking-Aided Structure-Activity Analysis
The ligands of certain G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) have been identified as endogenous lipids, such as lysophosphatidylserine (LysoPS). Here, we analyzed the molecular basis of the structure-activity relationship of ligands of GPR34, one of the LysoPS receptor subtypes, focusing on recognition of the long-chain fatty acid moiety by the hydrophobic pocket. By introducing benzene ring(s) into the fatty acid moiety of 2-deoxy-LysoPS, we explored the binding site's preference for the hydrophobic shape. A tribenzene-containing fatty acid surrogate with modifications of the terminal aromatic moiety showed potent agonistic activity toward GPR34. Computational docking of these derivatives with a homology modeling/molecular dynamics-based virtual binding site of GPR34 indicated that a kink in the benzene-based lipid surrogates matches the L-shaped hydrophobic pocket of GPR34. A tetrabenzene-based lipid analogue bearing a bulky tert-butyl group at the 4-position of the terminal benzene ring exhibited potent GPR34 agonistic activity, validating the present hydrophobic binding pocket model.

(Chemical Equation Presented) Hyperbranched polymers with a degree of branching of 100% were prepared by catalyst transfer Suzuki-Miyaura polymerization of AB2 monomers carrying one boronic acid and two aromatic bromo functional groups; in contrast, Suzuki-Miyaura polymerization of the same AB2 monomers using a traditional catalyst afforded hyperbranched polymers with a branching degree of only ～56%. Synthesis and Properties of Liquid Crystalline 4,4 -Dialkoxy-2'-Methyl-p-Terphenyls
A new series of laterally substituted terphenyl compounds, 4,4 -dialkoxy-2'-methyl-p-terphenyls (n = 1-12), were synthesized. Their liquid crystallinities were characterized by means of polarizing optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray difraction (XRD). The influence of the length of the terminal alkoxy groups on the liquid crystalline behavior was investigated. It was found that the compounds with shorter end chains (n a smectic A mesophase is exhibited for those with longer end chains (9 = n = 12).

Structural factors controlling the transition between columnar-hexagonal and helical mesophase in triphenylene liquid crystals
A series of novel triphenylenes has been synthesised by a combination of palladium catalysed coupling, oxidative cyclisation, bromination and nucleophilic aromatic substitution. The new derivatives are designed to have structures which are intermediate between the known symmetrical materials hexakis(hexyloxy)triphenylene and hexakis(hexylthio)triphenylene. The compounds having four hexyloxy and two hexylthio substituents form only Colh mesophases. Triphenylenes having four hexylthio and two hexyloxy substituents also give Colh mesophases but 3,6-bis(hexyloxy)-2,7,10,11-tetrakis(hexylthio)triphenylene 5 is unique in that it cools into a stable, more ordered phase. The low temperature phase, which appears to be indefinitely stable at ambient temperature, is assumed to be helical based on transition enthalpy data.
