- Substituent effects on the absorption and vibrational spectra of some 2-hydroxy Schiff bases: DFT/TDDFT, natural bond orbital and experimental study
-
The electronic structure of salicylideneaniline (SA) and some of its derivatives are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The equilibrium geometric structures of the studied compounds are determined at the B3LYP/6-311++Glevel of theory. A set of 12 substituted SA derivatives is considered in the present work. The choice of these substituents aims to create a push-pull system on the SA basic structure which would shade light onto its photo physics. The electronic absorption spectra of SA are recorded in the UV-VIS region, in both polar and nonpolar solvents. Assignments of the observed electronic transitions are facilitated via time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) computations at the same level of theory. Electronic configurations contributing to each excited state are identified and the relevant MOs are characterized. The extent of delocalization and intramolecular charge transfer are estimated and discussed in terms of natural bond orbitals (NBO) analysis and second order perturbation interactions between donor and acceptor MOs. Solvent effects on the electronic absorption spectra are discussed in terms of the difference in polarizabilities of the ground and excited states. FTIR spectra of SA and its derivatives are measured in KBr platelets. Detailed vibrational assignments are given based on the calculated potential energy distributions. "IR marker bands" that characterize the SA framework are identified. The effect of substituents, the nature of the characteristic "marker bands", and intensity quenching of some bands are discussed.

- Synthesis and characterization of tridentate schiff base derivative of indenyl lanthanoid chloride tetrahydrofuranate complexes for catalytic applications
-
Four kinds of novel lanthanocene complexes were synthesized in reasonable yield by the reaction of equimolar quantity of sodium salt of tridentate Schiff base [N-(2-methoxyphenyl)salicylideneimine] with indenyl lanthanoid dichloride tetrahydrofuranate in tetrahydrofuran. All the complexes after purification were characterized by MS and EA, respectively. These complexes isomerized successfully the 1,5- hexadiene into a mixture of products such as 1,4-hexadiene, 2,4-hexadiene,1,3-hexadiene, methylenecyclopentane and methylcyclopentene. Similarly they also proved effective for the polymerization of methylmethacrylate (MMA), 56.45 % yield and high molecular weight (355 × 103).

- Schiff base derivative of cyclooctatetraenyl lanthanoid/NaH catalytic systems for the isomerization of 1,5-hexadiene
-
The different types of the tridentate Schiff base {N-(2-methoxyphenyl)- salicylideneamine} derivative of lanthnoid cyclooctatetraenyl complexes [COTLn Schiff base 2THF (Ln = Sm, Eu, Gd and Er)] along with NaH are proved to be a versatile tool for the isomerization of 1,5-hexadiene. The isomerization resulted a mixture of products such as 1,4-hexadiene, 1,3-hexadiene, 2,4-hexadiene, methylenecyclopentane and methylcyclopentene. Among these 1,4-hexadiene and methylenecyclopentane were the end products while 1,3-hexadiene, 2,4-hexadiene and methylcyclopetene were the intermediates. From the results it is assumed that radius of the metal is an important factor in determining the catalytic efficiency of the complexes.

- Synthesis, isolation and structural investigation of Schiff-base alkoxytitanium complexes: Steric limitations of ligand coordination
-
This paper reports the reaction of Ti(OiPr)4 with a series of Schiff-base ligands. The Schiff-base proligands 1a-1 are synthesised by the condensation of salicylaldehyde with a range of primary alkylamine and aniline derivatives. The treatment of 1a-f with Ti(OiPr)4 yields the octahedral bis(aryloxyimine)Ti(OiPr)2 complexes 2a-f. X-ray crystal structure analysis of 2c, 2d and 2e reveals complexes with a trans-aldiminato oxygen atom and cis-N,cis-alkoxide ligand arrangement about the central metal atom. The reactions of Ti(OiPr)4 with the ligands 1g and 1h result in a sterically induced ligand rearrangement to form the octahedral complexes 2g and 2h, also characterised by X-ray diffraction experiments, in which the nitrogen atoms of the O,N-chelate are now trans-orientated at the titanium centre. 1H NMR analysis reveals significant deshielding of the isopropoxide methine proton, induced by this coordination mode. In contrast, reactions of 1i and 1j with Ti(OiPr)4 result in the formation and isolation of the complexes 2i and 2j. X-ray crystal structure analysis shows complex 2j to have a previously unobserved ligand orientation, in which both ligands are trans-orientated, with respect to the aldiminato oxygen atoms, about the titanium centre, but steric bulk of the ligand inhibits the bidentate coordination of both O,N-ligands. Further increase in the steric bulk of the imine substituent results in a reduced reactivity for ligands 1k and 1l, such that Ti(OiPr)4 reacts with 1k to form the dimeric mono(Schiff-base) complex 2k (characterised by X-ray analysis). No reaction is observed for 11. Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 2006.

- Ortho-substituted aniline-N-salicylidenes as corrosion inhibitors for zinc in sulphuric acid
-
The corrosion of zinc in sulphuric acid containing different o-substituted aniline-N-salicylidenes has been studied with respect to inhibitor and acid concentration, period of exposure and temperature. All the five compounds studies show high (95-97%) inhibitive efficiency. At 0.5% inhibitor concentration in 0.5 M acid, the order of efficiency is: o-HNS (95.5%) o-CNS (96.8%) o-AnNS (99.7%) ≤ o-TNS (99.8%) ≤ ANS (99.9%). The activation energies are higher in inhibited than in uninhibited acid. It appears that an efficient inhibitor is characterized by a relatively greater decrease in the free energy of adsorption. Galvanostatic polarization studies indicate that these are mixed type inhibitors with predominant action on the local cathodes. Cathodic protection in the presence of these inhibitors has been studied. The inhibitors appear to function through adsorption due to the presence of the imine (-C=N-) group and conjugated double bonds.
