- Preparation of new bis(dialkylamino)phosphine species via reduction of bis(dialkylamino)halophosphines
-
Four new bis(dialkylamino)phosphine species, (Me2N)2PH, CH3NCH2CH2N(CH3)PH, (CO)3Ni[(Me2N)2PH], and (CO)3Ni-[CH3NCH2CH2N(CH 3)PH], have easily been prepared in good yields through reduction of corresponding bis(dialkylamino)-halophosphines by lithium tri-sec-butylborohydride. The preparation and characterization of these compounds are discussed. An improved synthesis for obtaining quantitative yields of (CO)3NiL [L = Me2NPF2, (Me2N)2PF, CH3NCH2CH2N(CH3)PF] is also described.

Mixtures of the Ni(CO)x(PF3)4-x compounds can best be prepared by either the interaction of Ni(CO)4 and Ni(PF3)4 at about 70° or the reaction between PF3 and Ni(CO)4 at 100° in a pressure vessel. The presence of finely divided nickel metal in the latter approach increases the yield. The composition of the mixtures represents a nearly random arrangement of ligands among the various species. The pure compounds, isolated by means of vapor phase chromatography, have physical properties quite similar to those of the parent compounds and infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance studies clearly pointout the very great similarity between CO and PF3 as ligands.
