- Chemoselective reductions of nitroarenes: Bromoethanol-assisted phthalocyanatoiron/NaBH4 reductions

Porphyrinatoiron/NaBH4 and a novel phthalocyanatoiron/NaBH4 catalyst systems were investigated for the reductions of nitroarenes. The phthalocyanatoiron/NaBH4 system was superior to the porphyrinatoiron/NaBH4 system. The reductions were performed in good yields and excellent chemoselectivities. The rate of reduction by the PcFe/NaBH4 system increased upon the addition of 2-bromoethanol.

- Design, synthesis and biological evaluation of novel o-aminobenzamide derivatives as potential anti-gastric cancer agents in vitro and in vivo

Although gastric cancer has become a major public health problem, oral agents applied in clinics for gastric cancer therapy are scarce. Therefore, to explore new oral chemical entities with high efficiency and low toxicity, 41 o-aminobenzamide derivatives based on the scaffolds of MS-275 and SAHA were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for their anti-gastric cancer abilities in vitro and in vivo. Structure-activity relationships were discussed, leading to the identification of compounds F8 (IC50 = 0.28 μM against HGC-27 cell) and T9 (IC50 = 1.84 μM against HGC-27 cell) with improved cytotoxicity, anti-gastric cancer proliferation potency, induction of cell apoptosis and cell cycle arrest ability, inhibition of cell migration and invasion. What is worth mentioning is that compound F8 was more efficient and less toxic than the positive drug capecitabine in vivo on the HGC-27-xenograft model. Meanwhile, compound F8 exhibited suitable pharmacokinetic properties and less acute toxicity (LD50 > 1000 mg/kg). Besides, western blotting analysis, IHC analysis, differentially expressed proteins analysis and ABPP experiment indicated that compound F8 could modulate molecular pathways involved in apoptosis and cell cycle progression. Consequently, compound F8 is a strong candidate for the development of human gastric cancer therapy.

- A Straightforward Approach to Multifunctional Graphene

Graphene has been covalently functionalized through a one-pot reductive pathway using graphite intercalation compounds (GICs), in particular KC8, with three different orthogonally protected derivatives of 4-aminobenzylamine. This novel multifunctional platform exhibits excellent bulk functionalization homogeneity (Hbulk) and degree of addition while preserving the chemical functionalities of the organic addends through different protecting groups, namely: tert-butyloxycarbonyl (Boc), benzyloxycarbonyl (Cbz) and phthalimide (Pht). We have employed (temperature-dependent) statistical Raman spectroscopy (SRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), magic angle spinning solid state 13C NMR (MAS-NMR), and a characterization tool consisting of thermogravimetric analysis coupled with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (TG-GC-MS) to unambiguously demonstrate the covalent binding and the chemical nature of the different molecular linkers. This work paves the way for the development of smart graphene-based materials of great interest in biomedicine or electronics, to name a few, and will serve as a guide in the design of new 2D multifunctional materials.

- Carbamate Synthesis Using a Shelf-Stable and Renewable C1 Reactant

4-Propylcatechol carbonate is a shelf-stable, renewable C1 reactant. It is easily prepared from renewable 4-propylcatechol (derived from wood) and dimethyl carbonate (derived from CO2) using a reactive distillation system. In this work, the 4-propylcatechol carbonate is used for the two-step synthesis of carbamates under mild reaction conditions. In the first step, 4-propylcatechol carbonate is treated with an alcohol at 50–80 °C in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst, such as Zn(OAc)2?2 H2O. With liquid alcohols, no solvent is used and with solid alcohols 2-methyltetrahydrofuran is used as solvent. In the second step, the alkyl 2-hydroxy-propylphenyl carbonate intermediates obtained react with amines at room temperature in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran, forming the target carbamates and the byproduct 4-propylcatechol, which can be recycled into a carbonate reactant.

- One-pot triple functionalization of carbon nanotubes
-
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are very promising as carriers for the delivery of bioactive molecules. The multifunctionalization of CNTs is necessary to impart multimodalities for the development of future CNT-based multipotent therapeutic constructs. In this context, we report the first example of covalent trifunctionalization of different types of CNTs. Our strategy is a simple and efficient methodology based on the simultaneous functionalization of the nanotube surface with three different active groups. The reaction is performed in one step by arylation with diazonium salts generated in situ. The CNTs are functionalized with benzylamine moieties blocked with three different protecting groups that can be selectively removed under specific conditions. The trifunctionalized CNTs were characterized by TEM, thermogravimetric analysis, and Raman and UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy, while the amine loading was determined by using the Kaiser test. The sequential removal of the protecting groups of the amine functions allows the grafting of the molecules of interest on the nanotube surface to be con-trolled
