A study of the interaction of organotrichlorophosphonium hexachlorophosphates with phosphorous acid derivatives has shown that, depending on the structure of the P(III) derivative, reaction occurs by either a halophilic process, leading to reduction of the substrates to the corresponding organodichlorophosphines, or a process involving transfer of a dialkylamide group to the phosphorus atom of the chlorophosphonium cation, the full esters and diester amides acting largely as phosphorus-centered nucleophiles, and the full amides and diamide esters acting as nitrogen-centered nucleophiles.The direction of the reaction depends on the first ionization potential of the unshared electron pair of the partners at the P-Q dyad.
