On the Synthesis of Phaeantharine, II: Attemps to Synthesize the Unit B: 6,6',7-Trimethoxy-7',8-diisoquinolyl Ether
The synthesis of the isoquinolines 2 and 3 is described. They were to be combined by the Ullmann reaction to yield the ether 1.Despite many variations of the reaction conditions, 1 was formed in traces only. The main reaction is the dehalogenation of the isoquinoline 3.The use of N-formyltetrahydroisoquinoline 9 instead of 3 was not successful, either.
