Novel ampholytic ter-polymers comprising at least an ethylenically unsaturated cationic monomer, a monomer containing a carboxylic acid or sulfonic acid group and diallyamine or derivative are claimed. Further, the ter-polymers may be used in personal care or personal washing compositions optionally in the presence of conditioning agents such as silicone, fatty amines, fatty amine oxides and fatty quaternaries and/or various benefit agents. The ter-polymer compositions are especially useful in the treatment of keratin-containing substrates. Keratin substrates include, but are not limited to, animal and human hair, skin and nails.

The present invention provides a compound having the formula: STR1 in which each Rd is the same or different and each is --NH--Z--N(Ra)(Rb) or --N--?Z--N(Ra)(Rb)!2 in which Z is C2 -C14 alkylene or optionally substituted arylene, Ra and Rb are the same or different and each is C1 -C12 alkyl, or Ra and Rb, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are each attached, form a morpholino, piperidino or piperazino ring; each Rc is the same or different and is NH2, NH(C1 -C4 alkyl), N(C1 -C4 alkyl)2, N(CH2 CH2 OH)2, O--C1 -C4 alkyl, STR2 alkali metal atom, ammonium or a cation formed from an amine; or a quaternized form thereof. The present invention also relates to a composition for the treatment of textiles, in particular to a composition containing the new ultra-violet absorbing agents; and to a method for the improvement of both the sun protection factor (UPF) and the whiteness of textile fiber material, comprising treating the material with the composition according to the present invention.
