- Synthesis of 4'-azido-2,2':6',2''-terpyridines and their iron(II) and ruthenium(II) complexes
-
Three different 4'-azido-2,2':6',2''-terpyridines have been synthesised. The structure of 4'-azido-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine was determined by X-ray crystal structure analysis. The iron(II) complex of this ligand has been prepared, while the azide group was reduced to amine in the ruthenium(II) complex under the reaction conditions.

- Fullerene polypyridine ligands: Synthesis, ruthenium complexes, and electrochemical and photophysical properties
-
Fullerene coordination ligands hearing one bipyridine or terpyridine unit were synthesized, and their coordination to ruthenium(II) formed linear rod-like donor-acceptor systems. Steady-state fluorescence of [Ru(bpy) 2(bpy-C60)]2- showed a rapid solvent-dependent, intramolecular quenching of the ruthenium(II) MLCT excited state. Time-resolved flash photolysis in CH3CN revealed characteristic transient absorption changes that have been ascribed to the formation of the C 60 triplet state, suggesting that photoexcitation of [Ru(bpy) 2(bpy-C60)]2+ results in a rapid intramolecular transduction of triplet excited state energy. The electrochemical studies on both [Ru(bpy)2(bpy-C60)]2+ and [Ru(tPy)(tPy-C60)]2- indicated electronic coupling between the metal center and the fullerene core.

- The design and synthesis of bis-[4'-azido-2,2':6',2-terpyridine platinum(II)] complexes with rigid and extended linkers for studying the topology of DNA by photoaffinity labeling
-
A family of bis-[4'-Azido-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine platinum(II)] complexes with linear linkers of varying length have been synthesized. They have been designed to bis-intercalate into two DNA duplexes in close proximity, the azido groups allowing the sites of intercalation to be photoaffinity labeled. The linker to Pt(II) bonds are susceptible to cleavage by thiols and cyanide ion, which is a requirement for the intended method of analysis by 2D gel electrophoresis. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

- Cytotoxicity of (2,2':6',2-terpyridine)platinum(II) complexes to Leishmania donovani, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Trypanosoma brucei
-
A range of (2,2':6',2''-terpyridine)platinum(II) complexes are shown to possess antiprotozoal activity in vitro against Leishmania donovani, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Trypanosoma brucei, the causative organisms of tropical diseases leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis. The best compounds caused 100% and 78% inhibition of growth of the intracellular amastigote forms of L. donovani and T. cruzi, respectively, at a concentration of 1 μM and 100% inhibition of growth of the bloodstream trypomastigote forms of T. brucei at a concentration of 0.03 μM. The results obtained with complexes in which the fourth ligand to platinum(II) is capable of being substituted with a substitution inert hydroxyethanethiolate complex are compared. The amine complexes show high antiprotozoal activity suggesting that the trans influence of the 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine ligand has a profound effect on the ease of displacement of the fourth ligand in (2,2':6',2''- terpyridine)platinum(II) complexes, although nonbonded interaction between the amine ligand and the 6 and 6'' hydrogens probably also weakens the ligation to Pt(II).
