A newsworthy class of carboxylate and sulfonate esters of 1-acetylferroceneoxime has been demonstrated as non-ionic photoacid generators (PAGs). PAGs based on 1-acetylferroceneoxime were synthesized in good yields by simple treatment of 1-acetylferroceneoxime with various carboxylic and sulfonyl chlorides. Newly developed PAGs of 1-acetylferroceneoxime showed good absorbance >350 nm. On irradiation using UV light (≥365 nm), carboxylates and sulfonates of 1-acetyl ferroceneoxime in aqueous acetonitrile solvent underwent efficient homolytic cleavage of N-O bond, resulting in the generation of carboxylic and sulphonic acids, respectively, with high chemical and good quantum yields. Further, we demonstrated the application of our newly developed 1-acetylferroceneoxime-based PAGs for gelation of biopolymer alginate on UV irradiation. More interestingly, we synthesized a ferroceneoxime bound photoresponsive polymer, 1-acetylferroceneoxime-polycaprolactone (AFO-PCL), and demonstrated its controlled surface wettability and generation of patterned surfaces.

[Problems] To provide a liquid dental adhesive composition which contains a phosphoric acid-type compound having a hydrogenphosphoric diester group as an acidic group-containing polymerizable monomer and, further, contains polyvalent metal ions, effectively preventing not only the gelation but also the formation of precipitates (cloudiness) during the storage. [Means for Solution] A dental adhesive composition which is acidic and contains an acidic group-containing polymerizable monomer (A), polyvalent metal ions (B), water (C), a water-soluble organic solvent (D) and fluoride ions (E), wherein at least 35% by mole of the acidic group-containing polymerizable monomer (A) is a phosphoric acid-type compound having a hydrogenphosphoric diester group, and the contents of the fluoride ions (E) and the polyvalent metal ions (B) are so set that a valence number ratio (RF) defined by the following formula (1): [in-line-formulae]RF=VF/TVP??(1)[/in-line-formulae]wherein VF is a valence number of the fluoride ions (E) contained in the composition, and TVP is a total valence number of the polyvalent metal ions (B) contained in the composition, satisfies a range of 0.2 to 2.0.

High ion-exchange capacity (IEC) sulfonated polystyrene nanoparticles were synthesized by an emulsion copolymerization of styrene, divinyl benzene and sulfonated styrene (SS). The effects of varying the counterion of the sulfonated styrene monomer, the SS concentration, the surfactant and the addition of a crosslinking agent on the ability to stabilize the emulsion nanoparticles to high IEC were studied. Water-insoluble nanoparticles, 20-160 nm in diameter, with IEC as high as 5.2 meq/g were achieved using sulfonated styrene with a quaternary alkyl ammonium cation, a non-ionic surfactant and a crosslinking agent in the emulsion formulation. That IEC corresponds to fully sulfonated crosslinked polystyrene.
