- Wittig Olefination Using Phosphonium Ion-Pair Reagents Incorporating an Endogenous Base
-
Despite common perception, the use of strong bases in Wittig chemistry is utterly unnecessary: we report a series of novel ion-pair phosphonium carboxylate reagents which are essentially "storable ylides". These reagents are straightforwardly prepared in excellent yields, and their fluxional nature permits clean olefination of a broad range of aldehydes and even hemiacetals.

- Syntheses of diarylethenes by perylene-catalyzed photodesulfonylation from ethenyl sulfones
-
Diarylethenes were obtained from the corresponding ethenyl sulfones by photocatalyzed desulfonylation using UV or blue LEDs. When perylene and i-Pr2NEt were used as a photocatalyst and a sacrificing reagent, respectively, this desulfonylation proceeded smoothly to afford the desired ethenes with the functional groups such as chloro, alkoxy and heteroaromatic rings remaining untouched. The use of a flow photoreactor enabled this desulfonylation to proceed more rapidly to finish in an hour of residence time.

- Ruthenium-Catalyzed E-Selective Alkyne Semihydrogenation with Alcohols as Hydrogen Donors
-
Selective direct ruthenium-catalyzed semihydrogenation of diaryl alkynes to the corresponding E-alkenes has been achieved using alcohols as the hydrogen source. The method employs a simple ruthenium catalyst, does not require external ligands, and affords the desired products in > 99% NMR yield in most cases (up to 93% isolated yield). Best results were obtained using benzyl alcohol as the hydrogen donor, although biorenewable alcohols such as furfuryl alcohol could also be applied. In addition, tandem semihydrogenation-alkylation reactions were demonstrated, with potential applications in the synthesis of resveratrol derivatives.

- Copper-catalysed, diboron-mediated: Cis -dideuterated semihydrogenation of alkynes with heavy water
-
Methods to incorporate deuterium atoms into organic molecules are valuable for the pharmaceutical industry. Here, we found that diboron reagents can efficiently mediate the transfer of two D atoms from heavy water directly onto alkynes through copper-catalysed cis-selective semihydrogenation. Avoiding the use of costly and flammable D2 gas, this safe and practical process can proceed with excellent chemoselectivity and stereoselectivity. Utilizing the present method as the key step, the formal asymmetric total synthesis of d2-deuterium-labeled cis-combretastatin A4 is demonstrated. Mechanistic studies suggest that monoborylation of alkynes is the key step for this semihydrogenation process.

- Stereodivergent Alkyne Reduction by using Water as the Hydrogen Source
-
A homogeneous Pd-catalyzed stereodivergent reduction of alkynes to Z and E alkenes by using H2O as the H2 source is presented. Mediated by a diboron reagent, the transfer hydrogenation has been accomplished to yield the desired geometrical isomer by rational ligand selection. The switchable stereoselectivity achieved using simple phosphine ligands is generally excellent. D2O has also been used as a D2 source for synthesizing the corresponding deuterated olefins. Supported by a gram-scale synthesis, the reaction can easily be scaled up making it an efficient way to prepare alkenes commercially as well. Mechanistic studies suggest formation of H?PdL2?OAc as the crucial step leading to the presence of two pathways involving H?Pd?B(OR)2 and molecular H2 as active intermediates.

- Diversity-oriented synthesis of multisubstituted olefins through the sequential integration of palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. 2-Pyridyldimethyl(vinyl)silane as a versatile platform for olefin synthesis
-
A novel strategy for the diversity-oriented synthesis of multisubstituted olefins, where 2-pyridyldimethyl (vinyl)silane functions as a versatile platform for olefin synthesis, is described. The palladium-catalyzed Heck-type coupling of 2-pyridyldimethyl(vinyl)silanes with organic iodides took place in the presence of Pd2-(dba) 3/tri-2-furylphosphine catalyst to give β-substituted vinylsilanes in excellent yields. The Heck-type coupling occurred even with α- and β-substituted 2-pyridyldimethyl(vinyl)silanes. The one-pot double Heck coupling of 2-pyridyldimethyl(vinyl)silane took place with two different aryl iodides to afford β,β-diarylated vinylsilanes in good yields. The palladium-catalyzed Hiyama-type coupling of 2-pyridyldimethyl(vinyl)silane with organic halides took place in the presence of tetrabutylammonium fluoride to give di- and trisubstituted olefins in high yields. The sequential integration of Heck-type (or double Heck) coupling and Hiyama-type coupling produced the multisubstituted olefins in regioselective, stereoselective, and diversity-oriented fashions. Especially, the one-pot sequential Heck/Hiyama coupling reaction provides an extremely facile entry into a diverse range of stereodefined multisubstituted olefins. Mechanistic considerations of both Heck-type and Hiyama-type coupling reactions are also described.

- Nickel-catalyzed electrochemical couplings of vinyl halides: Synthetic and stereochemical aspects
-
Homo- and cross-coupling involving alkenyl halides have been performed efficiently using an electroassisted nickel-complex catalysis. Valuable product such as conjugated dienes, β,γ- or γ,δunsaturated esters, ketones, or nitriles, as well as alkenylated aryl compounds are thus prepared with high yields and high stereoselectivity. Partial isomerization is only observed in a few cases, when the alkenyl halide is involved in a late step of the catalytic cycle. This is the case in the preparation of (Z,Z)-1,3-diene.

- Photocyclization and photooxidation of 3-styrylthiophene
-
The photocyclization, dye-sensitized photooxidation and auto- photooxidation of 3-styrylthiophene have been examined, cis-3-Styrylthiophene undergoes photochemical cis-trans isomerization and cyclization to dihydronaphtho-[1,2-b]thiophene. The quantum efficiency for photocyclization in nonpolar solvents is greater than that in polar solvents. Dye-sensitized photooxidation of 3-styrylthiophene gives benzaldehyde and 3- thiophenecarboxaldehyde. This oxidation proceeds via a superoxide radical anion pathway rather than singlet oxygen pathway. In the presence of oxygen photoirradiation of 3-styrylthiophene solution results in photocyclization, oxidation and dimerization. The mechanism of the latter two reactions was described in terms of formation of a charge transfer complex between oxygen and the substrate. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.
