- Competition and promotion between two different liquid-crystalline building blocks: Mesogen-jacketed liquid-crystalline polymers and triphenylene discotic liquid crystals

Mesogen-jacketed liquid-crystalline polymers (MJLCPs) containing two triphenylene (Tp) units in the side chains, denoted as PPnV (n = 3 or 6, which is the number of the methylene units between the terephthalate core and Tp moieties in the side chains), were synthesized through conventional free radical polymerization, and the phase behaviors of these new combined main-chain/side-chain liquid-crystalline (LC) polymers were investigated. The chemical structures of the monomers were confirmed by elemental analysis, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and 1H/13C NMR. The molecular characterizations of the polymers were performed with 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, and thermogravimetric analysis. LC behaviors of the polymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized light microscopy, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). Both polymers exhibit excellent thermal stabilities. DSC and WAXD results indicate that covalently incorporating Tp discotic liquid crystals has a tremendous effect on the LC behaviors of MJLCPs. As expected, the glass-transition temperature decreases as the spacer length increases. Both polymers form rectangular columnar (φR) phases at relatively high temperatures. At low temperatures, however, Tp moieties in the side chains form a discotic nematic (ND) phase in conjunction with the IR phase developed by the rod-like supramolecular mesogen - the MJLCP chain as a whole, owing to the self-organization of the Tp moieties. For PP6V in particular, a higher symmetry hexagonal columnar (φH) phase forms when temperature exceeds 225 °C. Individual ordered structures developed by these two LC building blocks are not only competitive but also promotive to each other.

A novel mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer (MJLCP) containing two triphenylene (Tp) units in the side chains, named poly[bis(3,6,7,10,11-pentakis(hexyloxy)triphenylen-2-yl)2-vinyl terephthalate] (PBTCS), was designed and successfully synthesized via conventional free radical polymerization. - Triphenylene-based side chain liquid crystalline block copolymers containing a PEG block: Controlled synthesis, microphase structures evolution and their interplay with discotic mesogenic orders
-
Triphenylene (TP) derivatives are typical and probably the most widely studied discotic liquid crystalline (DLC) materials. Through polymer analogous reactions to attach TP mesogens to the well-synthesized poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PEG-PHEA) by ATRP, a series of well-defined side chain DLC diblock copolymers PEG-poly(TPm) (m = 6 or 10) with DLC block weight fraction (fw,DLC) ranging from 37% to 90% have been successfully prepared with narrow molecular weight distribution (PDI ≤ 1.11). An intriguing microphase-separated superstructure evolution and the correlation between overall morphologies and discotic mesogenic orders as a function of fw,DLC and temperature have been demonstrated by combination of DSC, POM, and variable temperature SAXS/WAXS. Those copolymers with lower DLC contents (fw,DLC = 37% and 43%) and at lower temperatures formed lamellar structures of variant periods and underwent order-order transitions upon PEG region crystallization at 45 C and different discotic mesophases of ND or Ncol transition at about 25 C. For the copolymer with intermediate fw,DLC = 62%, a high temperature hexagonal packed cylinder (HPC) structure of amorphous PEG nanocylinders in the matrix of DLC was formed above 35 C, while upon cooling below 35 C it turned into a mixed lamellar structure with PEG region crystallization. The higher fw,DLC (67% ~ 80%) copolymers exhibited HPC structures with the DLC matrix showing Ncol or ND mesophases. For copolymers with the highest fw,DLC around 90%, an overall ND phase was developed in sharp contrast to the ordered columnar phase formed by their corresponding DLC homopolymers, which was quite inspiring and might suggest another pathway of attaining this important nematic discotic phase through introducing a suitable copolymerized block. The better understanding of the interrelation of microstructures and discotic mesogenic orders constitutes the key basis for utilizing such type of organic semiconductor materials and could help to guide the design of complex DLC polymer materials with hierarchical structures for variant applications.

- CPI (complementary polytopic interaction) stabilised liquid crystal compounds formed by esters of 2-hydroxy-3,6,7,10,11-pentakis(hexyloxy)triphenylene

An improved synthesis of 2-hydroxy-3,6,7,10,11-pentakis(hexyloxy)triphenylene 6 is reported which is based on the oxidative coupling of 2-acetoxy-1-hexyloxybenzene 3 to 3,3′,4,4′-tetrakis(hexyloxy)biphenyl 4. Most of the esters of this phenol 7-15, give an enantiotopic Colh columnar liquid crystal phase, which is stable over a wide temperature interval. This can be further enhanced by formation of 1:1 CPI compounds with either 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexakis(4-nonylphenyl)triphenylene {PTP9} 1 or hexakis(4-nonylphenyl)dipyrazino[2,3-f:2′,3′-h]quinoxaline {PDQ9} 2. As with other triphenylene derivatives, these additives can also be used to induce liquid crystal behaviour in otherwise non-mesogenic esters.

- Triphenylene-based discotic-liquid-crystalline polymers: A universal, rational synthesis

A simple, regiospecific synthesis of main-chain, triphenylene-based discotic-liquid-crystalline polymers is described in which the key step is the assembly of the triphenylene nucleus through the oxidative coupling of phenyl and biphenyl residues. Hence, treatment of a mixture of 3,3′-bis(hexyloxy)-4,4′-dimethoxybiphenyl and 1,2-bis(hexyloxy)benzene with ferric chloride in dichloromethane followed by a reductive, methanol workup gives 2,7-dimethoxy-3,6,10,11-tetrakis(hexyloxy)triphenylene, 7. The 2,7-linked main-chain polymer 8 is produced by demethylation and condensation with 1,11-dibromoundecane, has average molecular weight 24 000, and Dh mesophase range of 98-118 °C. The 3,6- and 2,3-linked polymers were prepared in a similar manner.
