- Synthesis of copillar[5]arene by co-oligomerization of different monomers and its application to supramolecular polymer gel
-
A copillar[5]arene derivative with different repeating units was synthesized by co-oligomerization of different alkyl ethers. Copillar[5]arene-based supramolecular polymer gel was formed by a self-inclusion complexing in acetonitrile. The supramolecular polymer gel was driven by the C-H· π interactions, and presented two phases as time went on, and finally, constructed the supramolecular organic framework. Notably, the supramolecular polymer gel showed reversible gel-sol phase transitions upon heating and cooling. Meanwhile, the transparent films formed by the supramloecular gel show the potential application in the field of anti-acid rain materials.

- Photoswitchable J-aggregated processable organogel by integrating a photochromic acceptor
-
A novel αchromophoric 1,4-bis(anthracenylethynyl)benzene (BAB)-based highly emissive J-aggregated organogel has been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal structure determination of asymmetric π-chromophoric bola-amphiphilic BAB1 (dodecyl and triethyleneglycolmonomethylether containing side chains of bis(anthracenylethynyl)benzene) supports J-aggregation. Further, a photochromic acceptor chromophore, 4,4′-(perfluorocyclopent-1-ene-1,2-diyl)bis(5-methylthiophene-2-carbaldehyde), is noncovalently encapsulated in the gel and photoswitching studies have been performed based on photochromic F?rster resonance energy transfer. The modulated emission of the processable soft material is further exploited for rewritable display. However, BAB2 (dodecyl side chain on both sides) does not show gelation property due to its low solubility.

A solvent responsive dynamic nanoscale metal-organic framework (NMOF) [Zn(1 a)(H2O)2] has been devised based on the self-assembly of ZnII and asymmetric bola-amphiphilic oligo-(p-phenyleneethynylene) (OPE) dicarboxylate linker 1 a having dodecyl and triethyleneglycolmonomethylether (TEG, polar) side chains. In THF solvent, NMOF showed nanovesicular morphology (NMOF-1) with surface decorated dodecyl chains. In water and methanol, NMOF exhibited inverse-nanovesicle (NMOF-2) and nanoscroll (NMOF-3) morphology, respectively, with surface projected TEG chains. The pre-formed NMOFs also unveiled reversible solvent responsive transformation of different morphologies. The flexible NMOF showed cyan emission and no cytotoxicity, allowing live cell imaging. Cisplatin (14.4 wt %) and doxorubicin (4.1 wt %) were encapsulated in NMOF-1 by non-covalent interactions and, in vitro and in vivo drug release was studied. The drug loaded NMOFs exhibited micromolar cytotoxicity.

- Supramolecular enantiomeric and structural differentiation of amino acid derivatives with achiral pillar[5]arene homologs
-
Complexation of achiral pillar[5]arenes with chiral amines induced strong circular dichroism (CD) signals. The CD responses differed drastically depending on the nature of the amino acid guest, and they significantly varied and part of them even inverted, upon increasing the length of the alkyl chains of the pillar[5]arenes guests. Accordingly, this tactic allowed for the unprecedented simultaneous enantiomeric and structural differentiation of α-amino esters with homologous molecular hosts.

- Functional phenylethynylene side arm poly(arylene ethynylene) conjugated polymers: Optical and electrochemical behavior for enrichment of electronic applications
-
The poly(arylene ethynylene) (PAE) conjugated polymers (CPs) with a donor-acceptor (D-A) side arm have been designed and synthesized using Sonogashira cross coupling in the presence of cyano methylene, or cyano thiophene gave diethynyl (A) and alkoxy and alkyl substituted diiodo aryl monomers (D). An interesting electronic response in optical measurements such as UV-visible (UV-vis) and fluorescence (FL) spectra was observed in tetrahydrofuran solvent. From the FL spectra, it was observed that the CP solutions possess an interesting long bathochromic shift when compared with the UV-vis spectra, because of the electron withdrawing, electron releasing and conjugation effects. The electrochemical and thin film UV-vis spectral measurements provided highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) electronic energy levels and their corresponding semiconducting electronic energy gaps (Eg) of the PAE CPs. Among the side arm CPs, polymers P1 and P5 have low Eg of 2.14 eV and 2.17 eV. The new PAE CPs are reliable for use in electronic and photonics applications.

- Synthesis and Properties of Triphenodioxazine-Based Conjugated Polymers for Polymer Solar Cells
-
As a fused-ring conjugated unit, triphenodioxazine, has been applied in two series of thiophene-free conjugated polymers for polymer solar cells. The polymers were synthesized through a multi-step synthetic route, and the substituents had a great effect on the reactivity of the reactants. Relationships among the polymer structures as well as thermal, optical, and electrochemical properties were investigated in detail by experimental data analysis and theoretical simulation. The polymers possess highly planar backbones, broad Vis/NIR absorption bands, suitable frontier molecular orbital energies, and low band gaps ranging from 1.3 to 1.8 eV. The power conversion efficiencies of their photovoltaic devices are about 1 %. Introducing longer alkyl side chains into a polymer can bring about a better film-forming ability and improve the photovoltaic performance.

- Benzylidenecyclohexanone-triazole-based conjugated polymer: Click synthesis, Staudinger end-capping and application as optical probe scaffold
-
A type of benzylidenecyclohexanone-triazole based conjugated polymer (P5) was successfully synthesized by Cu+-catalyzed Click reaction. The THF solution of P5 exhibited specific optical response (increase in absorption and decrease in fluorescence) toward I?. With the further addition of Hg2+ into the assembly of P5-I?, distinctive recovery of optical properties was detected, suggests that P5-I? adduct can act as fluorescence turn-on probing platform for Hg2+. Post-polymerization of P5 was implemented by catalyst-free Staudinger reaction between P5 and triphenylphosphine to afford phosphinimine-endcapped polymer (P5-TPP). Different from the blue-greenish emission (~490?nm) of P5, P5-TPP emitted yellow light (~550?nm) in THF–water mixture (VTHF/Vwater?=?2/8). P5-TPP displayed specific fluorescence ratiometric alteration toward hypochlorite ion in THF–water mixture (VTHF/Vwater?=?2/8, pH?=?7.4), which might be due to the hypochlorite-induced hydrolysis of phosphinimine energy-transfer acceptors in P5-TPP. The results suggest that P5 can act as structure scaffold for the construction of optical probe for triple analytes (I?, Hg2+ and ClO?).

- Effect of the bulkiness of the end functional amide groups on the optical, gelation, and morphological properties of oligo(p-phenylenevinylene) π-gelators
-
Herein, we describe the role of end functional groups in the self-assembly of amide-functionalized oligo(p-phenylenevinylene) (OPV) gelators with different end-groups. The interplay between hydrogen-bonding and π-stacking interactions was controlled by the bulkiness of the end functional groups, thereby resulting in aggregates of different types, which led to the gelation of a wide range of solvents. The variable-temperature UV/Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic features of gelators with small end-groups revealed the formation of 1D H-type aggregates in CHCl3. However, under fast cooling in toluene, 1D H-type aggregates were formed, whereas slow cooling resulted in 2D H-type aggregates. OPV amide with bulky dendritic end-group formed hydrogen-bonded random aggregates in toluene and a morphology transition from vesicles into fibrous aggregates was observed in THF. Interestingly, the presence of bulky end-group enhanced fluorescence in the xerogel state and aggregation in polar solvents. The difference between the aggregation properties of OPV amides with small and bulky end-groups allowed the preparation of self-assembled structures with distinct morphological and optical features. Buying in bulk: OPV amides with small end-groups self-assemble into 2D/1D aggregates in toluene and 1D aggregates in CHCl3. Bulky end-groups impede fluorescence quenching in the self-assembled state by blocking π-stacking and facilitate morphological transition in THF.

- Molecular spoked wheels: Synthesis and self-assembly studies on rigid nanoscale 2D objects
-
We present the efficient synthesis of a new molecular spoked-wheel structure (MSW-3). Two derivatives with diameters of approximately 4 nm have been prepared. By highlighting the importance of pseudo-high-dilution conditions during cyclization, we were able to access the compounds on a several hundred milligram scale. In addition to the standard characterization (NMR spectroscopy, MS), we describe a detailed investigation of the optical properties of the fluorescent MSWs by comparison with appropriate model chromophores. Furthermore, a comprehensive study of the structure in solution by means of light- and X-ray scattering experiments has been conducted. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) revealed the two-dimensional organization of the molecules on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite and emphasized the spoked-wheel structure. The diameter of these molecules measured by small-angle X-ray scattering is in very good agreement with that obtained from STM and matches the results of molecular modeling. This confirms the rigidifying effect of the spokes, which results in highly shape-persistent nanometer-sized oblate organic compounds. Copyright

A new type - π-conjugated copolymers of 2-amino-pyrimidine was prepared between 2-amino-4,6-diiodidepyrimidine and 1,4-dibromo-2,5-dialkoxybenzene by Sonogashira polycondensation. The structures of the copolymers were elucidated by FT-IR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR, fluorescence spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, thermal analysis and element analysis. The derived polymers were soluble in common organic solvents and trifloroacetic acid and exhibited good thermal stability. They emitted green light under UV irradiation in solid state and blue or green light in solution phase, respectively. Electrochemical behavior of these new polymers depicted facile p-doping and good electron-transporting properties. These polymers displayed bathochromic shift when protonated with CH3SO3H acid in chloroform solutions or m-cresol solutions and the red-shifted peaks were observed from 490 nm to 652 nm. XRD patterns of copolymers showed that the intensity of peaks was enhanced with increasing alkyloxy chain length.

- Synthesis and property studies of linear and kinked poly(pyreneethynylene)s
-
A series of fluorescent conjugated polymers, poly(pyreneethynylene)s, have been designed and synthesized to investigate the effect of shape of polymer backbone on physical properties. Polymers with linear and kinked backbone were synthesized using 1,6- and 1,8-disubstituted pyrene. The target copolymers were designed to incorporate various spacer units, such as, alkoxyphenyl, carbazole and fluorene on the polymer backbone. Characterization of the target compounds was achieved by NMR, IR, GPC and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Detailed investigation on their optical, electrochemical and thermal properties revealed significant contribution of the geometry of polymer backbone towards physical properties. Kinked backbone of cisoid-polymers was found to result in lower optical band gap, less negative EHOMO and higher thermal stability as compared to their linear analogues, most probably due to the coiling of polymer chains. Comparison of the physical properties of the polymers with those of the model compounds suggested similar extent of conjugation through 1,6- and 1,8-position of pyrene.

- Molecular mechanism of anomalous increase in the helical pitch of cholesteric liquid crystals induced by achiral dopants
-
A dopant-induced anomalous increase in the helical pitch of dicholesteryl 10,12-docosadiynedioate 1 is explained by generation of smectic clusters in the cholesteric phase where the dopants act as promoters of smectic domains. The dopants, having a mesogenic core and the proper length of alkyl chains on both their molecular sides, such as 4,4′-dialkylazobenzenes, 4,4′-dialkylazoxybenzenes and 4,4′-dialkylbiphenyls, considerably increase the pitch. However, dopants having benzene or a binaphthyl structure in the molecular center, and alkyl chain at one side of the molecules and Z-isomers of azobenzene and azoxybenzene derivatives slightly decrease the pitch by acting as impurities that decrease the transition temperature of the host. At X-ray diffraction study of the cholesterics revealed that the pitch increases with an increase in size and amount of the smectic domains induced by the appropriate dopants.
