Nickel-Catalyzed Enantioselective Hydroboration of Vinylarenes
The enantioselective hydroboration of vinylarenes catalyzed by a chiral, nonracemic nickel catalyst is presented as a facile method for generating chiral benzylic boronate esters. Various vinylarenes react with bis(pinacolato)diboron (B2pin2) in the presence of MeOH as a hydride source to form chiral boronate esters in up to 92% yield with up to 94% ee. The use of anhydrous Me4NF to activate B2pin2 is crucial for ensuring fast transmetalation to achieve high enantioselectivities.

Nickel-Catalyzed Reductive Cross-Coupling of Aryl Bromides with Vinyl Acetate in Dimethyl Isosorbide as a Sustainable Solvent
A nickel-catalyzed reductive cross-coupling has been achieved using (hetero)aryl bromides and vinyl acetate as the coupling partners. This mild, applicable method provides a reliable access to a variety of vinyl arenes, heteroarenes, and benzoheterocycles, which should expand the chemical space of precursors to fine chemicals and polymers. Importantly, a sustainable solvent, dimethyl isosorbide, is used, making this protocol more attractive from the point of view of green chemistry.

Visible-Light Photoredox-Catalyzed Dicarbofunctionalization of Styrenes with Oxime Esters and CO2: Multicomponent Reactions toward Cyanocarboxylic Acids and γ-Keto Acids
A photoredox-catalyzed dicarbofunctionalization of styrenes with oxime esters and CO2 has been achieved. Notably, a series of four-, five-, or six-membered cyclic ketone oximes worked well to furnish a wide range of ε-, ζ-, and η-cyanocarboxylic acids in good yields. Furthermore, a series of γ-keto acids also could be obtained by employing acyclic ketone oxime esters as the carbonyl radical precursor. It provides convergent access to diverse biologically important cyanocarboxylic and γ-keto acids.

Photoredox catalysis on unactivated substrates with strongly reducing iridium photosensitizers
Photoredox catalysis has emerged as a powerful strategy in synthetic organic chemistry, but substrates that are difficult to reduce either require complex reaction conditions or are not amenable at all to photoredox transformations. In this work, we show that strong bis-cyclometalated iridium photoreductants with electron-rich β-diketiminate (NacNac) ancillary ligands enable high-yielding photoredox transformations of challenging substrates with very simple reaction conditions that require only a single sacrificial reagent. Using blue or green visible-light activation we demonstrate a variety of reactions, which include hydrodehalogenation, cyclization, intramolecular radical addition, and prenylationviaradical-mediated pathways, with optimized conditions that only require the photocatalyst and a sacrificial reductant/hydrogen atom donor. Many of these reactions involve organobromide and organochloride substrates which in the past have had limited utility in photoredox catalysis. This work paves the way for the continued expansion of the substrate scope in photoredox catalysis.

Cross-Coupling through Ag(I)/Ag(III) Redox Manifold
In ample variety of transformations, the presence of silver as an additive or co-catalyst is believed to be innocuous for the efficiency of the operating metal catalyst. Even though Ag additives are required often as coupling partners, oxidants or halide scavengers, its role as a catalytically competent species is widely neglected in cross-coupling reactions. Most likely, this is due to the erroneously assumed incapacity of Ag to undergo 2e? redox steps. Definite proof is herein provided for the required elementary steps to accomplish the oxidative trifluoromethylation of arenes through AgI/AgIII redox catalysis (i. e. CEL coupling), namely: i) easy AgI/AgIII 2e? oxidation mediated by air; ii) bpy/phen ligation to AgIII; iii) boron-to-AgIII aryl transfer; and iv) ulterior reductive elimination of benzotrifluorides from an [aryl-AgIII-CF3] fragment. More precisely, an ultimate entry and full characterization of organosilver(III) compounds [K]+[AgIII(CF3)4]? (K-1), [(bpy)AgIII(CF3)3] (2) and [(phen)AgIII(CF3)3] (3), is described. The utility of 3 in cross-coupling has been showcased unambiguously, and a large variety of arylboron compounds was trifluoromethylated via [AgIII(aryl)(CF3)3]? intermediates. This work breaks with old stereotypes and misconceptions regarding the inability of Ag to undergo cross-coupling by itself.

Controlling the Lewis Acidity and Polymerizing Effectively Prevent Frustrated Lewis Pairs from Deactivation in the Hydrogenation of Terminal Alkynes
Two strategies were reported to prevent the deactivation of Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) in the hydrogenation of terminal alkynes: reducing the Lewis acidity and polymerizing the Lewis acid. A polymeric Lewis acid (P-BPh3) with high stability was designed and synthesized. Excellent conversion (up to 99%) and selectivity can be achieved in the hydrogenation of terminal alkynes catalyzed by P-BPh3. This catalytic system works quite well for different substrates. In addition, the P-BPh3 can be easily recycled.

KO-t-Bu Catalyzed Thiolation of β-(Hetero)arylethyl Ethers via MeOH Elimination/hydrothiolation
Herein, we describe a KO-t-Bu catalyzed thiolation of β-(hetero)arylethyl ethers through MeOH elimination to form (hetero)arylalkenes followed by anti-Markovnikov hydrothiolation to afford linear thioethers. The system works well with a variety of β-(hetero)arylethyl ethers, including electron-deficient, electron-neutral, electron-rich, and branched substrates and a range of aliphatic and aromatic thiols.

Absolute stereochemical determination of 1,2-diols via complexation with dinaphthyl borinic acid
Rapid derivatization of chiral 1,2-diols with dinaphthyl borinic acid (DBA) leads to a cyclic boronate, enabling the absolute stereochemical prediction via exciton-coupled circular dichroic (ECCD) of the naphthyl groups. Aryl- and alkyl-substituted 1,2-diols derivatized with DBA yield a predictable ECCD, which is also in agreement with theoretical predictions derived from computationally minimized structures.

Synthesis method of monosubstituted styrene
The invention discloses a synthetic method of monosubstituted styrene. According to the method, monosubstituted benzaldehyde and methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide are used as initial raw materials, tetrahydrofuran is used as a solvent, strong base without nitrogen protection and low-temperature reaction conditions is used for reaction at normal temperature and normal pressure, and after the reaction is finished, a flash column chromatography method is used for post-treatment to obtain monosubstituted styrene. According to the method, water-free and oxygen-free harsh operation conditions are avoided, and the synthesis cost is reduced; the post-treatment process is simplified, quenching and extraction operations are not needed, the post-treatment time is shortened, a large amount of eluentdoes not need to be used, and the product loss is reduced.

Visible-Light-Induced Pd-Catalyzed Radical Strategy for Constructing C-Vinyl Glycosides
A novel visible-light-induced palladium-catalyzed Heck reaction for bromine sugars and aryl olefins with high regio- and stereochemistry selectivity for the preparation of C-glycosyl styrene is described. This reaction takes place in one step at room temperature by using a simple and readily available starting material. This protocol can be scaled up to a wide range of glycosyl bromide donors and aryl olefin substrates. Mechanistic studies indicate that a radical addition pathway is involved.

Formation of Nucleophilic Allylboranes from Molecular Hydrogen and Allenes Catalyzed by a Pyridonate Borane that Displays Frustrated Lewis Pair Reactivity
Here we report the in situ generation of nucleophilic allylboranes from H2 and allenes mediated by a pyridonate borane that displays frustrated-Lewis-pair reactivity. Experimental and computational mechanistic investigations reveal that upon H2 activation, the covalently bound pyridonate substituent becomes a datively bound pyridone ligand. Dissociation of the formed pyridone borane complex liberates Piers borane and enables a hydroboration of the allene. The allylboranes generated in this way are reactive towards nitriles. A catalytic protocol for the formation of allylboranes from H2 and allenes and the allylation of nitriles has been devised. This catalytic reaction is a conceptually new way to use molecular H2 in organic synthesis.

Efficient palladium-catalyzed synthesis of 2-aryl propionic acids
A flexible two-step, one-pot procedure was developed to synthesize 2-aryl propionic acids including the anti-inflammatory drugs naproxen and flurbiprofen. Optimal results were obtained in the presence of the novel ligand neoisopinocampheyldiphenylphosphine (NISPCPP) (9) which enabled the efficient sequential palladium-catalyzed Heck coupling of aryl bromides with ethylene and hydroxycarbonylation of the resulting styrenes to 2-aryl propionic acids. This cascade transformation leads with high regioselectivity to the desired products in good yields and avoids the need for additional purification steps.

Deoxygenation of Epoxides with Carbon Monoxide
The use of carbon monoxide as a direct reducing agent for the deoxygenation of terminal and internal epoxides to the respective olefins is presented. This reaction is homogeneously catalyzed by a carbonyl pincer-iridium(I) complex in combination with a Lewis acid co-catalyst to achieve a pre-activation of the epoxide substrate, as well as the elimination of CO2 from a γ-2-iridabutyrolactone intermediate. Especially terminal alkyl epoxides react smoothly and without significant isomerization to the internal olefins under CO atmosphere in benzene or toluene at 80–120 °C. Detailed investigations reveal a substrate-dependent change in the mechanism for the epoxide C?O bond activation between an oxidative addition under retention of the configuration and an SN2 reaction that leads to an inversion of the configuration.

Piperazine-promoted gold-catalyzed hydrogenation: The influence of capping ligands
Gold nanoparticles (NPs) combined with Lewis bases, such as piperazine, were found to perform selective hydrogenation reactions via the heterolytic cleavage of H2. Since gold nanoparticles can be prepared by many different methodologies and using different capping ligands, in this study, we investigated the influence of capping ligands adsorbed on gold surfaces on the formation of the gold-ligand interface. Citrate (Citr), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and oleylamine (Oley)-stabilized Au NPs were not activated by piperazine for the hydrogenation of alkynes, but the catalytic activity was greatly enhanced after removing the capping ligands from the gold surface by calcination at 400 °C and the subsequent adsorption of piperazine. Therefore, the capping ligand can limit the catalytic activity if not carefully removed, demonstrating the need of a cleaner surface for a ligand-metal cooperative effect in the activation of H2 for selective semihydrogenation of various alkynes under mild reaction conditions.

Fabrication of Ni3N nanorods anchored on N-doped carbon for selective semi-hydrogenation of alkynes
Nickel is a highly active catalyst for the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes. However, the low selectivity of the alkene product caused by the over-hydrogenation reaction on Ni has hindered its practical applications. In this work, we report a new nickel nitride (Ni3N)-catalyzed semi-hydrogenation of alkynes to the corresponding alkenes. The Ni3N nanorods were facilely fabricated via a direct pyrolysis of the solid mixture of nickel acetate tetrahydrate and melamine (Mlm). The Ni3N phase in the optimum catalyst (Ni3N/NC-6/5-550) is shown to be effective and stable in the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes, with a high yield and good selectivity for alkenes (Z/E ratios up to >99/1). Both terminal and internal alkynes bearing a broad scope of functional groups are readily converted into alkenes with good chemo- and stereoselectivity. Notably, it was found that the over-hydrogenation can be markedly suppressed even at high conversion of alkyne. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the low interaction between the alkene product and the Ni3N might plays a critical role in the selectivity enhancement.

Semihydrogenation of Alkynes Catalyzed by a Pyridone Borane Complex: Frustrated Lewis Pair Reactivity and Boron–Ligand Cooperation in Concert
The metal-free cis selective hydrogenation of alkynes catalyzed by a boroxypyridine is reported. A variety of internal alkynes are hydrogenated at 80 °C under 5 bar H2 with good yields and stereoselectivity. Furthermore, the catalyst described herein enables the first metal-free semihydrogenation of terminal alkynes. Mechanistic investigations, substantiated by DFT computations, reveal that the mode of action by which the boroxypyridine activates H2 is reminiscent of the reactivity of an intramolecular frustrated Lewis pair. However, it is the change in the coordination mode of the boroxypyridine upon H2 activation that allows the dissociation of the formed pyridone borane complex and subsequent hydroboration of an alkyne. This change in the coordination mode upon bond activation is described by the term boron-ligand cooperation.

Selective Transfer Semihydrogenation of Alkynes with H2O (D2O) as the H (D) Source over a Pd-P Cathode
We reported a selective semihydrogenation (deuteration) of numerous terminal and internal alkynes using H2O (D2O) as the H (D) source over a Pd-P alloy cathode at a lower potential. P-doping caused the enhanced specific adsorption of alkynes and the promoted intrinsic activity for producing adsorbed atomic hydrogen (H*ads) from water electrolysis. The semihydrogenation of alkynes could be accomplished at a lower potential with up to 99 % selectivity and 78 % Faraday efficiency of alkene products, outperforming pure Pd and commercial Pd/C. This electrochemical semihydrogenation of alkynes might proceed via a H*ads addition pathway rather than a proton-coupled electron transfer process. The decreased amount of H*ads at a lower potential and the more preferential adsorption of the Pd-P to C≡C π bond than C=C moiety resulted in the excellent alkene selectivity. This method was capable of producing mono-, di-, and tri-deuterated alkenes with up to 99 % deuterium incorporation.

Catalytic α-Selective Deuteration of Styrene Derivatives
We report an operationally simple protocol for the catalytic α-deuteration of styrenes. This process proceeds via the base-catalyzed reversible addition of methanol to styrenes in DMSO-d6 solvent. The concentration of methanol is shown to be critical for high yields and selectivities over multiple competing side reactions. The synthetic utility of α-deuterated styrenes for accessing deuterium-labeled chiral benzylic stereocenters is demonstrated.

Phosphonium Phenolate Zwitterion vs Phosphonium Ylide: Synthesis, Characterization and Reactivity Study of a Trimethylphosphonium Phenolate Zwitterion
4-Methoxy-3-(trimethylphosphonio)phenolate was obtained from a regioselective addition of PMe3 to p-quinone monoacetal. This compound undergoes hydrogen isotope exchange with D2O or CD3CN, and is capable of catalyzing H/D exchange of CD3CN with substrates bearing weakly acidic hydrogens. It exhibits similar reactivity to phosphorus ylides for olefinations of aldehydes. A possible tautomerization between the phosphonium phenolate zwitterion and phosphonium ylide is proposed for the first time to rationalize the unique reactivity.

Pd-Catalyzed Synthesis of Vinyl Arenes from Aryl Halides and Acrylic Acid
Acrylic acid is presented as an inexpensive, non-volatile vinylating agent in a palladium-catalyzed decarboxylative vinylation of aryl halides. The reaction proceeds through a Heck reaction of acrylic acid, immediately followed by protodecarboxylation of the cinnamic acid intermediate. The use of the carboxylate group as a deciduous directing group ensures high selectivity for monoarylated products. The vinylation process is generally applicable to diversely substituted substrates. Its utility is shown by the synthesis of drug-like molecules and the gram-scale preparation of key intermediates in drug synthesis.

Nickel-Catalyzed Stereodivergent Synthesis of E- and Z-Alkenes by Hydrogenation of Alkynes
A convenient protocol for stereodivergent hydrogenation of alkynes to E- and Z-alkenes by using nickel catalysts was developed. Simple Ni(NO3)2?6 H2O as a catalyst precursor formed active nanoparticles, which were effective for the semihydrogenation of several alkynes with high selectivity for the Z-alkene (Z/E>99:1). Upon addition of specific multidentate ligands (triphos, tetraphos), the resulting molecular catalysts were highly selective for the E-alkene products (E/Z>99:1). Mechanistic studies revealed that the Z-alkene-selective catalyst was heterogeneous whereas the E-alkene-selective catalyst was homogeneous. In the latter case, the alkyne was first hydrogenated to a Z-alkene, which was subsequently isomerized to the E-alkene. This proposal was supported by density functional theory calculations. This synthetic methodology was shown to be generally applicable in >40 examples and scalable to multigram-scale experiments.

Synthesis and Catalytic Applications of [N,N]-Pyrrole Ligands for the Regioselective Synthesis of Styrene Derivatives
We report the synthesis of two [N,N]-donor ligands (5 a–b) containing a 2-chalcogenazoline as the structural motif. These compounds were synthesized from a common intermediate Fischer type aminocarbene complex (3). The palladium-complexes of these [N,N]-donor ligands were successfully used as catalytic precursors in the Mizoroki-Heck coupling reaction between aryl halides and methyl acrylate, styrene and ethylene. For methyl acrylates, high yields with TOF values between 0.6 and 5.5×105 h?1 were obtained. In the case of ethylene, we reached high regioselectivities to obtain a diversity of styrene derivatives under soft pressure conditions, with good values of TON and TOF. (Figure presented.).

Monodisperse nickel-nanoparticles for stereo- and chemoselective hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes
Here, we report the use of monosaccharides for the preparation of novel nickel nanoparticles (NP), which constitute selective hydrogenation catalysts. For example, immobilization of fructose and Ni(OAc)2 on silica and subsequent pyrolysis under inert atmosphere produced graphitic shells encapsulated Ni-NP with uniform size and distribution. Interestingly, fructose acts as structure controlling compound to generate specific graphitic layers and the formation of monodisperse NP. The resulting stable and reusable catalysts allow for stereo- and chemoselective semihydrogenation of functionalized and structurally diverse alkynes in high yields and selectivity.

Enantioselective, Catalytic Vicinal Difluorination of Alkenes
The enantioselective, catalytic vicinal difluorination of alkenes is reported by II/IIII catalysis using a novel, C2-symmetric resorcinol derivative. Catalyst turnover via in situ generation of an ArIIIIF2 species is enabled by Selectfluor oxidation and addition of an inexpensive HF–amine complex. The HF:amine ratio employed in this process provides a handle for regioselective orthogonality as a function of Br?nsted acidity. Selectivity reversal from the 1,1-difluorination pathway (geminal) to the desired 1,2-difluorination (vicinal) is disclosed (>20:1 in both directions). Validation with electron deficient styrenes facilitates generation of chiral bioisosteres of the venerable CF3 unit that is pervasive in drug discovery (20 examples, up to 94:06 e.r.). An achiral variant of the reaction is also presented using p-TolI (up to >95 % yield).

Catalytic Asymmetric Dearomatization by Visible-Light-Activated [2+2] Photocycloaddition
A novel method for the catalytic asymmetric dearomatization by visible-light-activated [2+2] photocycloaddition with benzofurans and one example of a benzothiophene is reported, thereby providing chiral tricyclic structures with up to four stereocenters including quaternary stereocenters. The benzofurans and the benzothiophene are functionalized at the 2-position with a chelating N-acylpyrazole moiety which permits the coordination of a visible-light-activatable chiral-at-rhodium Lewis acid catalyst. Computational molecular modeling revealed the origin of the unusual regioselectivity and identified the heteroatom in the heterocycle to be key for the regiocontrol.

Palladium nanocatalysts in glycerol: Tuning the reactivity by effect of the stabilizer
Palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) prepared in neat glycerol containing TPPTS (tris(3-sulfophenyl)phosphine trisodium salt) or cinchona-based alkaloids (cinchonidine, quinidine) as capping agents, were applied as catalysts in fluoride-free Hiyama couplings and conjugate additions with the aim of evaluating the influence of the stabilizer in the catalytic reactivity. Cobalt(II)-based Metalloradical Activation of 2-(Diazomethyl)pyridines for Radical Transannulation and Cyclopropanation
A new catalytic method for the denitrogenative transannulation/cyclopropanation of in-situ-generated 2-(diazomethyl)pyridines is described using a cobalt-catalyzed radical-activation mechanism. The method takes advantage of the inherent properties of a CoIII-carbene radical intermediate and is the first report of denitrogenative transannulation/cyclopropanation by a radical-activation mechanism, which is supported by various control experiments. The synthetic benefits of the metalloradical approach are showcased with a short total synthesis of (±)-monomorine.

Evaluation of Potential Safety Hazards Associated with the Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling of Aryl Bromides with Vinylboron Species
The potential safety hazards associated with the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of aryl bromides with vinylboron species were evaluated. In the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of 1-bromo-3-(trifluoromethyl)benzene with potassium vinyltrifluoroborate in the presence of potassium carbonate (K2CO3) in 9:1 dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/water at 80 °C, the thermal profile revealed a significant exotherm upon the addition of catalytic 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene palladium(II) dichloride [Pd(dppf)Cl2]. Further investigations indicated that the exotherm was consistently higher and the reactions were faster in the studied aqueous systems compared to anhydrous conditions. Although under anhydrous conditions the exotherms were comparable among the studied cases, the rate of the exotherm was highly dependent on the choice of aryl electrophile, solvent, base, catalyst, as well as vinylboron species. In many of the studied cases the maximum temperature of a synthesis reaction (MTSR) was considerably higher than the boiling point of the solvent and/or the onset temperature of the DMSO decomposition, indicating that in the absence of active cooling the system could quickly exceed the boiling point of the solvent or trigger the decomposition of the reaction mixture to result in a runaway reaction.

Fluorinative Rearrangements of Substituted Phenylallenes Mediated by (Difluoroiodo)toluene: Synthesis of α-(Difluoromethyl)styrenes
Phenylallenes undergo fluorinative rearrangement upon the action of (difluoroiodo)toluene in the presence of 20 mol % BF3?OEt2 to yield α-difluoromethyl styrenes. This unprecedented reaction was entirely chemoselective for the internal allene π bond, and showed remarkable regioselectivity during the fluorination event. Substituted phenylallenes, phenylallenes possessing both phenyl- and α-allenyl substituents, and diphenylallenes were investigated, and good functional-group compatibility was observed throughout. The ease with which allenes can be prepared on a large scale, and the operational simplicity of this reaction allowed us to rapidly access fluorine-containing building blocks that have not been accessed by conventional deoxyfluorination strategies.

Synthesis of Functionalized Alkenes by a Transition-Metal-Free Zweifel Coupling
The Zweifel reaction is a powerful method for the synthesis of alkenes, serving as a transition-metal-free alternative to the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction. To date, the scope of the Zweifel coupling has been rather narrow and has focused mainly on the coupling of vinyllithium reagents to synthesize simple aryl- and alkyl-substituted olefins. Herein, the development of a general transition-metal-free coupling process enabling the coupling of Grignard reagents or organolithiums is described. Synthesis of α-pyrones by catalytic oxidative coupling of terminal alkynes and carbon dioxide
The use of the complex [(dippe)Ni(μ-H)]2(1) as a catalyst precursor (10?mol%) in the presence of a variety of terminal alkynes and CO2allowed the production of substituted α–pyrones. This reaction occurs using relatively mild conditions (50?°C, 150 psi of CO2) with good to modest yields, depending on the nature of the substituents in the corresponding alkyne. Selective Semihydrogenation of Alkynes with N-Graphitic-Modified Cobalt Nanoparticles Supported on Silica
For the first time N-graphitic-modified cobalt nanoparticles (Co/phen@SiO2-800) are shown to be active in the semihydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes. Key to success for efficient catalysis is both the modification of the metal nanoparticles by nitrogen-doped graphitic layers and the use of silica as support. Several internal alkynes are converted to the Z isomer in high yields with up to 93% selectivity. In addition, a variety of terminal alkynes, including sensitive functionalized compounds, are readily converted into terminal alkenes. Notably, this non-noble-metal catalyst allows for the purification of alkenes by selective hydrogenation of the corresponding alkyne in the presence of an excess of olefin.

Structurally Defined Molecular Hypervalent Iodine Catalysts for Intermolecular Enantioselective Reactions
Molecular structures of the most prominent chiral non-racemic hypervalent iodine(III) reagents to date have been elucidated for the first time. The formation of a chirally induced supramolecular scaffold based on a selective hydrogen-bonding arrangement provides an explanation for the consistently high asymmetric induction with these reagents. As an exploratory example, their scope as chiral catalysts was extended to the enantioselective dioxygenation of alkenes. A series of terminal styrenes are converted into the corresponding vicinal diacetoxylation products under mild conditions and provide the proof of principle for a truly intermolecular asymmetric alkene oxidation under iodine(I/III) catalysis.

Direct Olefination of Alcohols with Sulfones by Using Heterogeneous Platinum Catalysts
Carbon-supported Pt nanoparticles (Pt/C) were found to be effective heterogeneous catalysts for the direct Julia olefination of alcohols in the presence of sulfones and KOtBu under oxidant-free conditions. Primary alcohols, including aryl, aliphatic, allyl, and heterocyclic alcohols, underwent olefination with dimethyl sulfone and aryl alkyl sulfones to give terminal and internal olefins, respectively. Secondary alcohols underwent methylenation with dimethyl sulfone. Under 2.5 bar H2, the same reaction system was effective for the transformation of alcohol OH groups to alkyl groups. Structural and mechanistic studies of the terminal olefination system suggested that Pt0 sites on the Pt metal particles are responsible for the rate-limiting dehydrogenation of alcohols and that KOtBu may deprotonate the sulfone reagent. The Pt/C catalyst was reusable after the olefination, and this method showed a higher turnover number (TON) and a wider substrate scope than previously reported methods, which demonstrates the high catalytic efficiency of the present method. Bis(1-cyanovinyl acetate) Is a Linear Precursor to 3-Oxidopyrylium Ions
Herein we describe the first approach to 3-oxidopyrylium ions from a linear precursor. Heating bis(1-cyanovinyl acetate) in the presence of a trace amount of pyridinium p-toluenesulfonate results in a series of acyl group transfers and an intramolecular cyclization event to form a 3-oxidopyrylium ion that can be trapped by reaction with several dipolarophiles. When treated with dienes, the result is a sequential [5 + 2]/[4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction that provides sp3-rich products of high molecular complexity.

Hydrosilylation of Terminal Alkynes Catalyzed by a ONO-Pincer Iridium(III) Hydride Compound: Mechanistic Insights into the Hydrosilylation and Dehydrogenative Silylation Catalysis
The catalytic activity in the hydrosilylation of terminal alkynes by the unsaturated hydrido iridium(III) compound [IrH(κ3-hqca)(coe)] (1), which contains the rigid asymmetrical dianionic ONO pincer ligand 8-oxidoquinoline-2-carboxylate, has been studied. A range of aliphatic and aromatic 1-alkynes has been efficiently reduced using various hydrosilanes. Hydrosilylation of the linear 1-alkynes hex-1-yne and oct-1-yne gives a good selectivity toward the β-(Z)-vinylsilane product, while for the bulkier t-Bu-C≡CH a reverse selectivity toward the β-(E)-vinylsilane and significant amounts of alkene, from a competitive dehydrogenative silylation, has been observed. Compound 1, unreactive toward silanes, reacts with a range of terminal alkynes RC≡CH, affording the unsaturated η1-alkenyl complexes [Ir(κ3-hqca)(E-CH=CHR)(coe)] in good yield. These species are able to coordinate monodentate neutral ligands such as PPh3 and pyridine, or CO in a reversible way, to yield octahedral derivatives. Further mechanistic aspects of the hydrosilylation process have been studied by DFT calculations. The catalytic cycle passes through Ir(III) species with an iridacyclopropene (η2-vinylsilane) complex as the key intermediate. It has been found that this species may lead both to the dehydrogenative silylation products, via a β-elimination process, and to a hydrosilylation cycle. The β-elimination path has a higher activation energy than hydrosilylation. On the other hand, the selectivity to the vinylsilane hydrosilylation products can be accounted for by the different activation energies involved in the attack of a silane molecule at two different faces of the iridacyclopropene ring to give η1-vinylsilane complexes with either an E or Z configuration. Finally, proton transfer from a η2-silane to a η1-vinylsilane ligand results in the formation of the corresponding β-(Z)- and β-(E)-vinylsilane isomers, respectively.

Copper-mediated trifluoromethylation of diaryliodonium salts with difluoromethyltriflate
The reaction of diaryliodonium salts with difluoromethyltriflate in the presence of TBAT and CuTC gave the corresponding trifluoromethylated arenes in moderate yields. Compared to other difluorocarbene-derived trifluoromethylation reactions, the current one proceeded at mild reaction conditions (room temperature) within short reaction time (5 min).

Supported gold nanoparticles catalyzed: Cis -selective semihydrogenation of alkynes using ammonium formate as the reductant
TiO2 supported gold nanoparticles with low loading (0.5 mol%) are able to semihydrogenate non-fluorinated and gem-difluorinated alkynes to cis-alkenes with high selectivity, using cost-effective and easy-to-handle ammonium formate as the reductant. No over-reduction was observed. The good recyclability of Au/TiO2 allows for "green" semireduction of alkynes. A difluorinated pyran and α,β-unsaturated δ-lactone were easily prepared from the obtained gem-difluoro alkene building blocks.

Ligand-Controlled Cobalt-Catalyzed Transfer Hydrogenation of Alkynes: Stereodivergent Synthesis of Z- and E-Alkenes
Herein, we report a novel cobalt-catalyzed stereodivergent transfer hydrogenation of alkynes to Z- and E-alkenes. Effective selectivity control is achieved based on a rational catalyst design. Moreover, this mild system allows for the transfer hydrogenation of alkynes bearing a wide range of functional groups in good yields using catalyst loadings as low as 0.2 mol %. The general applicability of this procedure is highlighted by the synthesis of more than 50 alkenes with good chemo- and stereoselectivity. A preliminary mechanistic study revealed that E-alkene product was generated via sequential alkyne hydrogenation to give Z-alkene intermediate, followed by a Z to E alkene isomerization process.

Reversible [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of 1,3,2,5-diazadiborinine with ethylene
Under ambient conditions, a [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of 1,3,2,5-diazadiborinine 1 with ethylene afforded a bicyclo[2.2.2] derivative 2, which was structurally characterized. The cyclization process was found to be reversible, and thus retro-[4 + 2] cycloaddition reproduced 1 quantitatively, concomitant with the release of ethylene. Compound 1 reacted regio-selectively and stereo-selectively with styrene derivatives and norbornene, respectively, and these processes were found to be reversible too. Computational studies determined the reaction pathways which were consistent with the regio-selectivity observed in the reaction of styrene, and the reaction was suggested to be essentially concerted but highly asynchronous.

A transition-metal-free Heck-type reaction between alkenes and alkyl iodides enabled by light in water

Arylation of perfluoroalkyl vinyl sulfoxides via the Heck reaction
Heck reactions of perfluoroalkyl vinyl sulfoxides with aryl iodides are studied and palladium(II) acetate is shown to be the most convenient catalyst for this process. New E-1-aryl-2-perfluoroalkylsulfinylethylenes are synthesized. In all cases, by-products without a perfluoroalkylsulfinyl group are formed.
