- Enhanced Electron Transfer Reactivity of a Nonheme Iron(IV)-Imido Complex as Compared to the Iron(IV)-Oxo Analogue
-
Reactions of N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA) with nonheme iron(IV)-oxo and iron(IV)-tosylimido complexes occur via different mechanisms, such as an N-demethylation of DMA by a nonheme iron(IV)-oxo complex or an electron transfer dimerization of DMA by a nonheme iron(IV)-tosylimido complex. The change in the reaction mechanism results from the greatly enhanced electron transfer reactivity of the iron(IV)-tosylimido complex, such as the much more positive one-electron reduction potential and the smaller reorganization energy during electron transfer, as compared to the electron transfer properties of the corresponding iron(IV)-oxo complex.

- Photochemical Co-Oxidation of Sulfides and Phosphines with Tris(p-bromophenyl)amine. A Mechanistic Study
-
The photochemistry of tris(p-bromophenyl)amine was investigated in a nitrogen- and oxygen-flushed solution under laser flash photolysis conditions. The detected intermediates were the corresponding amine radical cation ("Magic Blue") and the N-phenyl-4a,4b-dihydrocarbazole radical cation that, under an oxygen atmosphere, is converted to the corresponding hydroperoxyl radical. The role of the last species was supported by the smooth co-oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides. On the other hand, co-oxidation of nucleophilic triarylphosphines to triarylphosphine oxides arose from an electron transfer between the photogenerated "Magic Blue" and phosphine that prevented the amine cyclization. In this case, intermediate Ar3POO?+ was found to play a key role in phosphine oxide formation.

- Minimization of Carrier Losses for Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells through Structural Modification of Triphenylamine Derivatives
-
Three hole transport materials (HTMs) based on a substituted triphenylamine moiety have been synthesized and successfully employed in triple-cation mixed-halide PSCs, reaching efficiencies of 19.4 %. The efficiencies, comparable to those obtained using spiro-OMeTAD, point them out as promising candidates for easily attainable and cost-effective alternatives for PSCs, given their facile synthesis from commercially available materials. Interestingly, although all these HTMs show similar chemical and physical properties, they provide different carrier recombination kinetics. Our results demonstrate that is feasible through the molecular design of the HTM to minimize carrier losses and, thus, increase the solar cell efficiencies.

- Pyrene-containing conjugated organic microporous polymers for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water
-
Photoactive conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) are emerging as porous materials capable of mediating the photocatalytic evolution of H2from water. In this study, we synthesized three pyrene-based CMPs (Py-F-CMP, Py-TPA-CMP, Py-TPE-CMP) through Sonogashira-Hagihara cross-couplings of 1,3,6,8-tetraethynylpyrene (Py-T, as a common monomer building block) with 2,7-dibromo-9H-fluorene (F-Br2), tris(4-bromophenyl)amine (TPA-Br3), and 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-bromophenyl)ethene (TPE-Br4), respectively, in the presence of Pd(PPh3)4in DMF/Et3N. We then characterized the chemical structures, crystallinities, thermal stabilities, surface morphologies, and porosities of these three new CMPs. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analyses and tests of photocatalytic H2production revealed that Py-TPA-CMP displayed the highest BET surface area (454 m2g?1), highest total pore volume (0.28 cm3g?1), highest H2evolution rate (19?200 μmol h?1g?1), and highest apparent quantum yield (15.3%) when compared with those of Py-F-CMP, Py-TPE-CMP, and other organic porous materials.

- Metallated Graphynes as a New Class of Photofunctional 2D Organometallic Nanosheets
-
Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials are attracting much attention due to their excellent electronic and optical properties. Here, we report the first experimental preparation of two free-standing mercurated graphyne nanosheets via the interface-assisted bottom-up method, which integrates both the advantages of metal center and graphyne. The continuous large-area nanosheets derived from the chemical growth show the layered molecular structural arrangement, controllable thickness and enhanced π-conjugation, which result in their stable and outstanding broadband nonlinear saturable absorption (SA) properties (at both 532 and 1064 nm). The passively Q-switched (PQS) performances of these two nanosheets as the saturable absorbers are comparable to or higher than those of the state-of-the-art 2D nanomaterials (such as graphene, black phosphorus, MoS2, γ-graphyne, etc.). Our results illustrate that the two metallated graphynes could act not only as a new class of 2D carbon-rich materials, but also as inexpensive and easily available optoelectronic materials for device fabrication.

- Multi-Component Metal-Organic Frameworks Significantly Boost Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Production Coupled with Selective Organic Oxidation
-
Visible-light-driven hydrogen production coupled with selective organic oxidation has attracted increasing attention, as it not only provides clean and renewable energy, but also utilizes the other half reaction to achieve some value-added organic chemicals. Metal-organic frameworks based on metal clusters and organic ligands self-assembly give a perspective on the formation of multifunctional heterogeneous photocatalyst to significantly boost visible-light photocatalytic activities under mild conditions. By incorporating two types of photoactive units, tricarboxytriphenylamine (H3TCA) and tris(4-(pyridinyl)phenyl)amine (NPy3), into a single metal-organic frameworks, a multi-component MOF Co-MIX was obtained. With the redox active metal centers enabling the photoexcitation reduction of protons into hydrogen and the photogenerated holes promoting considerable oxidation of substrates, the resulting Co-MIX exhibits high catalytic activity for the photocatalytic hydrogen production coupled with selective oxidation of benzylamine or 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline. Importantly, the photocatalytic experiments of single-component Co-TCA and Co-NPy3 verified the positive synergistic effects on stability and photocatalytic ability of the two ligands (H3TCA and NPy3) in one single MOF, revealing that the multi-component strategy is very important for the efficient charge separation and excellent photocatalytic activity of the catalyst.

- Dye-sensitized electron transfer from TiO2 to oxidized triphenylamines that follows first-order kinetics
-
Two sensitizers, [Ru(bpy)2(dcb)]2+ (RuC) and [Ru(bpy)2(dpb)]2+ (RuP), where bpy is 2,2′-bipyridine, dcb is 4,4′-dicarboxylic acid-2,2′-bipyridine and dpb is 4,4′-diphosphonic acid-2,2′-bipyridine, were anchored to mesoporous TiO2 thin films and utilized to sensitize the reaction of TiO2 electrons with oxidized triphenylamines, TiO2(e-) + TPA+ → TiO2 + TPA, to visible light in CH3CN electrolytes. A family of four symmetrically substituted triphenylamines (TPAs) with formal Eo(TPA+/0) reduction potentials that spanned a 0.5 eV range was investigated. Surprisingly, the reaction followed first-order kinetics for two TPAs that provided the largest thermodynamic driving force. Such first-order reactivity indicates a strong Coulombic interaction between TPA+ and TiO2 that enables the injected electron to tunnel back in one concerted step. The kinetics for the other TPA derivatives were non-exponential and were modelled with the Kohlrausch-William-Watts (KWW) function. A Perrin-like reaction sphere model is proposed to rationalize the kinetic data. The activation energies were the same for all of the TPAs, within experimental error. The average rate constants were found to increase with the thermodynamic driving force, consistent with electron transfer in the Marcus normal region.

The introduction of CC bonds in the periphery improves the photophysical behavior and optical qualities of the films in comparison with their introduction in the core of the dendrimer. Both dendrimers exhibit high Tgs (above 240 °C) and high-lying HOMO energy levels of ~5.2 eV. The present invention provides a process for producing an oxidation reaction product of an aromatic compound, having excellent environmental load reduction performance, cost reduction performance, etc. Provided is a process for producing an oxidation reaction product of a raw material aromatic compound by reacting the raw material aromatic compound with an oxidizing agent. The process further uses an electron donor-acceptor linked molecule. The process includes the step of: reacting the electron donor-acceptor linked molecule in an electron-transfer state, the oxidizing agent, and the raw material aromatic compound, thereby generating an oxidation reaction product resulting from oxidation of the raw material aromatic compound.

- Synthesis and applications of novel low bandgap star-burst molecules containing a triphenylamine core and dialkylated diketopyrrolopyrrole arms for organic photovoltaics
-
In this study, we used facile synthetic routes to construct two well-defined starburst donor/acceptor conjugated small molecules with broad absorption features; in TPAKP-2 and TPAKP-3, triphenylamine (TPA) moieties served as electron donor core units and dialkylated diketopyrrolopyrrole (DKP) moieties with symmetrical thiophene units served as electron acceptors, in 1:2 and 1:3 ratios, respectively. Our investigation of the photophysical properties indicated that the absorption bands of TPAKP-2, and TPAKP-3 extended up to 793 nm, with low optical band gaps of 1.56 and 1.65 eV respectively. Under illumination with AM 1.5 white light (100 mW cm-2), we investigated the performance of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaic devices incorporating an active layer of an electron-donor small molecule (TPAKP-2 or TPAKP-3) blended with an electron acceptor: [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) or [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) at various weight ratios. The photovoltaic device containing the donor TPAKP-3 and the acceptor PC71BM at a 1:3 weight ratio exhibited the best power conversion efficiency (1.81%), with an open circuit voltage of 0.66 V, a short circuit current density of 7.93 mA cm -2, and a fill factor of 34.7%.

- High performance aniline vapor detection based on multi-branched fluorescent triphenylamine-benzothiadiazole derivatives: Branch effect and aggregation control of the sensing performance
-
A series of benzothiadiazole-pyridine branched triphenylamine derivatives TPA1BP, TPA2BP and TPA3BP have been designed and synthesized to sense aniline vapor with distinguished sensitivity, selectivity and repeatability via photoinduced electron transfer (PET). Suitable energy levels ensure the high selectivity to aniline for all three sensory materials. However, the aggregations of the three materials in the film state on a quartz substrate increase along with the branches, which highly deteriorate the sensing performance for less efficient fluorescence, lower contact area and inferior vapor penetration. The oriented ZnO nanorod array is introduced as the substrate to eliminate the aggregation and enhance the sensing performance, because of its high surface-to-volume ratio and 3D structure. Therefore, the cooperative effect that the sensing performance of TPAnBP increases with the number of branches could be observed; fluorescence intensities of the films on the nano-substrate are 34%, 45% and 54% quenched for TPA1BP, TPA2BP and TPA3BP, respectively, after exposure to 300 ppm aniline vapor for less than 5 s. Moreover, the fluorescences of all three sensory materials are almost 100% recovered by eluting with fresh air for 20 s and could be reused immediately. The detection limits are predicted to be 1 ppm for TPA1BP, 100 ppb for TPA2BP and 1 ppb for TPA3BP according to the fitted plot, demonstrating a significant cooperative effect of the molecular branches.
