Molybdenum pentachloride induced the ring-opening reactions of cyclopropyl phenyl ketone or propyl 2-(trimethylsilylmethyl)cyclopropanecarboxylate to give 1-phenyl-1,2,4-trichloro-1-butene or cis-2-chloro-4-pentanolide, respectively.
